11:01 a.m., Feb. 27, 2009----UD in the News provides a roundup of recent news items about the University of Delaware, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.
Ralph Begleiter, Edward F. and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Communication and Distinguished Journalist in Residence, wrote a commentary for CNN on the decision by the Department of Defense to lift the ban on photographs of flag-draped coffins bearing the remains of soldiers who died overseas. Also, Begleiter was quoted on the topic in a Feb. 26 Associated Press story.
Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a Feb. 26 BusinessWeek story about deal making by wealthy financier Carl Icahn in difficult economic times. Elson also was quoted in a Feb. 23 Bloomberg story about Apple and the health of its chief executive officer, Steve Jobs.
James Corbett, associate professor of marine and earth studies, was cited in a Feb. 26 Associated Press story about ship emissions and air pollution.
Stacie Beck, associate professor of economics, and Eleanor Craig, associate professor of economics, wrote an opinion piece in the Feb. 26 News Journal about the federal stimulus plan, saying that to be effective any plan “must address the fundamental problem: too many Americans have been outspending their incomes.”
Ardeshir Faghri, professor of civil and environmental engineering, was quoted in a Feb. 25 News Journal story about a decrease in car travel among Delawareans.
John Byrne, director of the University of Delaware's Center for Energy and Environmental Policy, and Gordon Johnson, Kent County agricultural agent with University of Delaware Cooperative Extension, were quoted in a Feb. 22 News Journal feature about the changing climate of the state and what that could mean for flora and fauna.
Stephen Tanis, who retired from the University of Delaware faculty in 2000 and whose work is being shown through March 8 at the University Gallery, was featured in a review in the Feb. 22 Philadelphia Inquirer. “Tanis is a remarkably robust realist with demonstrable roots in Old Master technique and attitude,” wrote Inquirer art critic Ed Sozanski. “In particular, he often resembles a modern incarnation of the Italian master Caravaggio. His realization of figures and still lifes is exceptionally vibrant, and imbued with such spatial and psychological tension, as to make most of what his contemporaries are producing look insipid by comparison.”
Mike Byrne, former offensive lineman on the University of Delaware football team, was the subject of a feature in the Feb. 22 Lancaster (Pa.) Sunday News. Byrne spent one-half of last season on the practice squad with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League after being cut by the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League.
Muqtedar Khan, associate professor of political science and international relations, was quoted in a Feb. 21 Associated Press story about the beheading of an American Muslim woman, allegedly at the hands of her estranged American Muslim husband, in Buffalo, N.Y. Khan told AP that Muslim religious leaders must “be enlightened enough to recognize this violence happens, to not hide in denial or somehow blame it on American culture. In order to essentially condemn violence against women, they will have to treat women with greater respect. Unfortunately, the level of enlightenment among imams in North America varies significantly."
Fred DeMicco, ARAMARK Professor of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, and Kash Prasad, supplemental faculty in the Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, were featured in a Feb. 12 Hospitality.net story about the latest in the Cornell Hospitality Tools series, “Measuring the Dining Experience: The Case of Vita Nova,” in which they review the findings of a year-long survey at the University of Delaware restaurant.
