9:12 a.m., Feb. 6, 2009----UD in the News provides a roundup of recent news items about the University of Delaware, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.
Matt Martin, who earned a doctorate in economics from the University of Delaware in 1998, was cited in the Feb. 5 Charlotte Business Journal after being promoted to senior vice president and Charlotte regional executive by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. "I am very excited by this opportunity," Martin said. "I look forward to the new challenges that come with this role, and also in continuing my work in the region. I have been [in Charlotte, N.C.] for some time now and find the officers and staff to be great people and a lot of fun to work with." Martin joined the Charlotte Branch as a regional economist in 2006.
Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a Feb. 4 MarketWatch story about President Barack Obama's plan to cap the pay of top executives at institutions that receive federal bailout funds.
Elson also was quoted in stories on the topic in the Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle, News Journal and Christian Science Monitor, telling the latter that “there is a serious problem with compensation” in the financial sector and that its leaders had “convinced the world that they were the smartest human beings on the face of the earth” but “it turns out they weren't all that smart.”
Willett Kempton, associate professor of marine and earth studies, and his work in V2G research on vehicles that can return electricity to the power grid was featured Feb. 4 in a blog on the Discovery Channel Web site. Kempton's work also was the subject of a lengthy section-front feature in the Feb. 2 Philadelphia Inquirer.
Pat Devlin, former Penn State quarterback who has enrolled at UD and will play for the Blue Hens, was featured Feb. 4 on the Comcast Network and in a Feb. 5 story in the News Journal.
Lynn Snyder-Mackler, Alumni Distinguished Professor of Physical Therapy, was quoted in a Feb. 3 story in The New York Times about research on knee surgery recovery.
Richard Sylves, professor of political science and international relatons, was quoted in a widely distributed Feb. 2 Associated Press story about the federal response to a deadly ice storm that struck in Kentucky. "If it's perceived not to be handled very well, or if there's a sense that there's insensitivity at the federal level to the plight of people suffering, I imagine the people President Obama has appointed to senior positions in FEMA will be grilled in their confirmation hearings," Sylves told the AP.
John Antil, associate professor of business administration, was quoted in a Feb. 2 Baltimore Sun story on the controversy surrounding Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps, who issued a statement following the publication of an image that purports to show him smoking from a bong. "One of the first lessons we've learned from crisis management is to be honest. Next is to show regret," Antil told the Sun. "I would say that that statement is probably as good a statement as he could make. He didn't deny it. He gave a plausible reason: Young people do this. ... He didn't say, 'I didn't inhale.'"
Antil also was quoted in a Jan. 31 St. Louis Post-Dispatch story about Anheuser-Busch and Super Bowl advertising.
Vice President Joe Biden, a UD alumnus, was featured in a Feb. 1 Washingtonian story about his life “of surprising highs and extraordinary lows.”
