10:01 a.m., Feb. 23, 2009----Tiffany Straza, a doctoral student in oceanography in the University of Delaware's College of Marine and Earth Studies, has received an Outstanding Student Presentation Award from the American Society for Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO).

ASLO is America's leading professional organization for researchers and educators in aquatic science.

Straza received the award for a presentation given at the group's 2009 Aquatic Sciences Meeting held in Nice, France, last month. Total attendance for the event was 2,350, and of that number, 743 attendees were students.

Straza, who earned her bachelor's degree in oceanography from the University of Washington in 2005, studies under the direction of David Kirchman, the Maxwell P. and Mildred H. Harrington Professor of Marine Biosciences in the College of Marine and Earth Studies.

The title of her talk was “Geographic, seasonal, and phylogenetic variation in bacterial biovolumes based on protein and nucleic acid staining.”

Presentations were judged on the basis of innovation and/or significant scientific insight, quality of experimental design and methods, and clarity of presentation. Recipients received a certificate along with a monetary award.
