The presentation is the University's annual Louis L. Redding Diversity Lecture, which honors the late attorney Louis Lorenzo Redding for his efforts in the advancement of civil rights in Delaware and in the United States. Redding was the first African-American to be admitted to the Delaware Bar.

The lecture is sponsored by the UD Office of Affirmative Action and Multicultural Programs and is free and open to the public.

Nutter is a lifetime Philadelphian, with an accomplished career of public service, business and financial administration.

He was elected mayor of Philadelphia in 2007.

Prior to being elected mayor, Nutter served as a city councilman for nearly 15 years, representing Philadelphia's Fourth District, which is one of the city's largest, encompassing the communities of Wynnefield, Overbrook, Roxborough, Manayunk, East Falls, Mt. Airy, and parts of North and West Philadelphia.

From 2003 to 2007, Nutter served as chairman of the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority Board. There he crafted a groundbreaking labor-management agreement, and helped to bring about the Center's current $700 million expansion project.
