8:05 a.m., Feb. 25, 2009----To improve the security of the University of Delaware's information resources, UD now requires that all desktop or palmtop e-mail software use an SSL-encrypted connection to our inbound mail server.

Without this encryption turned on, you are potentially exposing your UDelNet password to eavesdroppers.

Users of UD's Webmail Direct -- people who use a Web browser to go to this site to read their e-mail -- are not affected.

Most faculty, students, and staff have their primary e-mail software configured correctly. However, some members of the University community do not yet have at least one of their e-mail clients (for example, Thunderbird on a home computer or the e-mail program on a “smart phone”) configured properly.

UD is in the process of e-mailing affected users that, after March 2, you will be unable to read your e-mail with the improperly configured software. The warning includes the IP address from which you used the e-mail software.

If you receive one of these messages, heed the warning: at least one of the e-mail programs you use is not set up correctly and will not work after March 2.

The IT Help Center has published a Web page with links to instructions to set the necessary encryption.

If you have any questions, contact your CITA or complete an IT Help Center Help Request form at this Web site.
