Designed for underrepresented students who are interested in pursuing graduate work in the humanities, the four-week institute offers an opportunity to work closely with some of the University's outstanding arts and humanities faculty and to experience the intellectual intensity and camaraderie of graduate education.

The institute invites applications from UD students, as well as students at historically black colleges and universities. Students in English, history, art conservation and material culture studies who will be seniors next year are encouraged to apply.

This year's program will include three disciplinary areas:

-- “Art Conservation and Material Culture,” offering students an introduction to global preservation issues and careers related to museums and the preservation of cultural artifacts, with hands-on experiences developing didactic materials about photograph preservation;
-- “English and American Print Culture,” introducing prospective graduate students to core areas of research strength for UD's English Department: the study of American and British print culture in the 19th and early 20th centuries; and
-- "African American Life from the Colonial Era through Reconstruction,” exploring the social, political, religious and economic factors that produced change and transformation in the lives of African Americans, providing students with a broad introduction to the interdisciplinary field of African American Studies.

Participants are selected through a competitive application process and are provided funding to participate in the program.
