7:55 a.m., Feb. 25, 2009----The Greater Newark Chapter of Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder (CHADD) will present a conference on “ADHD Across the Lifespan” on Saturday, March 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Dickinson High School in Wilmington, Del.
The event is co-sponsored by the University of Delaware Center for Disabilities Studies, the Parent Information Center of Delaware, the Mental Health Association in Delaware and Autism Delaware.
The conference is targeted for parents, caregivers, educators, college-age students, and adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the professionals who work with ADHD in their practices.
The morning session will focus on strategies for improving communication between child and parent, teacher and parent, and doctor and parent.
The featured speaker will be Jeffrey Bernstein, a licensed psychologist who specializes in couples and family therapy in the Philadelphia area. He has published two books related to children and parenting, 10 Days to a Less Defiant Child and 10 Days to a Less Distracted Child. His latest book, How to Like the Child You Love, is currently new in bookstores.
Bernstein's workshop will help parents of children with ADHD learn effective ways to work through a child's resistance, manage their own emotions at meetings with teachers and other professionals, help their child become more obedient at home and school, follow through on behavioral strategies, and become empowered through advocacy tools.
In the afternoon session, Ari Tuckman, a clinical psychologist whose primary work is with ADHD, anxiety, depression, and school/work and life balance issues, will describe how the brain of a person with ADHD processes information, leading to challenges with forgetfulness, time management, emotional control, planning and follow-through on tasks. He will also provide strategies for managing these challenges in oneself or others.
Tuckman currently runs a support group for teens with ADHD, serves on the Professional Advisory Board for the Chester County (Pa.) Chapter of CHADD, and is vice president of the Attention Deficit Disorder Association.
He has written Integrative Treatment for Adult ADHD: A Practical, Easy-to-use Guide for Clinicians. His second book, More Attention, Less Deficit: Success Strategies for Adults with ADHD will be available in May.
Lunch will be provided for the first 200 registrants. Advance registration is $25 for a single session or $45 for both sessions; registration at the door is $50 without lunch. Continuing education credits are offered for professionals. For more information, call (302) 737-5063 or e-mail [greater-newark@chadd.net].
