11:24 a.m., Feb. 12, 2009----Nancy Getchell and Thomas Kaminski, both associate professors in the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences (HNES) in the University of Delaware's College of Health Sciences, have been selected for induction as Research Consortium Fellows of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD).
The two are among just 14 individuals nationwide who will be inducted at the AAHPERD Convention and Exposition in Tampa, Fla., on April 2. They will join approximately 375 Fellows in the Consortium, a member group of more than 5,500 research scholars and other members of AAHPERD who have a strong interest in research.
AAHPERD is the largest organization of professionals supporting and assisting those involved in physical education, leisure, fitness, dance, and health promotion. The mission of the AAHPERD Research Consortium is to advance, promote, and disseminate quality research within and across the disciplines and the professions served by AAHPERD.
Attainment of Fellow status is one of the most prestigious honors the Research Consortium can bestow on a member. Fellows are selected based on evidence of scholarship, including research presentations and publications. According to Research Consortium President Gilmour Reeve, “Research Consortium Fellows demonstrate an ongoing commitment to research and a high level of achievement in their field.”
“It certainly reflects well on our exercise science and sports medicine faculty to have two individuals from the University of Delaware recognized with Fellow status in the AAHPERD Research Consortium,” said Susan Hall, chairperson of the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences. “Professors Getchell and Kaminski have been prolific in publishing and presenting their work and have also been significantly involved with service activities for the Research Consortium. So in both cases, the recognition of Fellow is well deserved.”
Kaminski, who is director of Athletic Training Education at UD, was recently named editor of a new professional journal, Athletic Training & Sports Health Care: The Journal for the Practicing Clinician. His research focuses on ankle instability, mild traumatic brain injuries in women's soccer, and functional performance assessment for the lower extremities.
Kaminski's work has been documented in papers published in journals including Isokinetics and Exercise Science, Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise, and Journal of Sport Rehabilitation. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Virginia.
Getchell, who earned her doctoral degree at the University of Wisconsin Madison, is also core faculty in Women's Studies and is affiliated with the Center for Disabilities Studies. Her research interests include the development of motor coordination and control in children with and without disabilities. Her papers have appeared in such publications as Developmental Psychobiology, Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, and Motor Control.
She is currently the section editor for “Growth and Motor Development” for Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport.
