9:56 a.m., Dec. 4, 2008----About 600 guests attended UDress Magazine's annual fall fashion event for, by and about UD students, which took place Saturday evening, Nov. 22, in the Multipurpose Rooms of the Trabant Student Center.
The event coincided with the release of UDress Magazine's ninth issue, which reflects all aspects of student life. The theme of the 40-plus-page publication is saving and restyling old trends for a greener future.
In efforts to increase sustainability, all tickets for the event were printed on recycled/post-consumer paper and the new issue was handed out in reusable grocery bags. The organizers also gave guests biodegradable plastic cups to take with them to reduce the amount of waste left behind.
The evening began with a magazine release party, sponsored by various boutiques, salons and local businesses throughout Delaware. There was live entertainment provided by The Shakedown, a local band, student DJ Dave Tusio, local artist Jared Weintraub and the D Sharps, a UD women's a cappella group.
Throughout the evening, various raffle drawings were held for prizes donated from the surrounding community. TOMS Shoes, a company that makes ultra lightweight shoes and matches every pair purchased with a donated pair to a child in need, received a portion of the total of about $350 collected from the raffles.
The evening concluded with a runway show competition, featuring merchandise from seven area boutiques, modeled by students.
The winners of the competition, Alison Cohen, a junior fashion merchandising major from Baltimore, and Taj Reed, a sophomore leadership major from Camden-Wyoming, Del., will be featured in UDress Magazine's spring 2009 issue.
