8:08 a.m., Dec. 5, 2008----Murray V. Johnston, professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Delaware, has been selected to receive the Benjamin Y. H. Liu Award from the American Association for Aerosol Research (AAAR).

The award recognizes outstanding contributions to aerosol instrumentation and experimental techniques that have significantly advanced the science and technology of aerosols.

Johnston was co-recipient of the award with Daniel Murphy of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The two are credited with revolutionizing aerosol chemistry with a 1991 paper describing a successful coupling of laser ablation of airborne particles with high-resolution mass spectrometry. The paper was published in the journal Analytical Chemistry.

Johnston, who earned his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin Madison, joined the UD faculty in 1990. His research focuses on analytical and environmental mass spectrometry and includes instrument/method development, laboratory studies, and field measurements.

AAAR is a nonprofit professional organization for scientists and engineers in the field of aerosol research, which includes a broad array of scientific disciplines from air pollution, pharmaceuticals, and combustion to public health, indoor air quality, and nuclear safety.

The association fosters the exchange of information among members and with other disciplines through conferences, symposia, and publication of a professional journal, Aerosol Science and Technology.
