12:34 p.m., April 17, 2009----UD in the News provides a roundup of recent news items about the University of Delaware, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.
William Poole, former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis and Distinguished Scholar in Residence in the Lerner College of Business and Economics, was quoted in an April 17 Associated Press story about banking industry bailouts and regulations. "We have a terrible, terrible problem now with all the big banks on federal life support," Poole said. "We have a situation that we call 'too big to fail.' It is assumed that no big bank would be allowed to fail, and it is a totally unacceptable situation."
David Weir, director of the Office of Economic Innovation and Partnerships, was quoted in an April 17 News Journal story about efforts by officials to tie Delaware in economically to a massive expansion at Aberdeen Proving Ground in nearby Maryland.
Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in an April 16 Christian Science Monitor story about executive pay. Elson also was quoted in an April 12 News Journal story about the job market for law students.
Robin Morgan, dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, was cited in an April 15 Salisbury (Md.) Daily Times story after receiving an award from the Delmarva Poultry Industry for her research that has been of benefit to growers.
Tom Evans, professor of plant and soil sciences, was quoted in an April 14 Cape Gazette story about a black swan found at Silver Lake in Rehoboth Beach.
Douglas Tallamy, chairperson of the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology and author of the book Bringing Home Nature: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens, was cited in an April 14 Peterborough (Ontario) Examiner story about backyard plantings that can play a role in saving threatened birds.
Yda Schreuder, associate professor of geography, was quoted in an April 13 Forbes story about the upcoming Copenhagen Climate Convention, specifically proposals for a cap and trade system to limit emissions. "If the U.S. does not come on board it would seem almost impossible that the European Union would steam forward with its own cap-and-trade system," she said.
Susan Strasser, professor of history and author of Waste and Want: A Social History of Trash, was quoted in an April 12 Washington Post story about the “greening” of a Northern Virginia moving and storage company that has stopped using cardboard boxes and found homes for items left behind. With the coming of consumerism, Strasser told the Post, "Cleanliness. Newness. Convenience. Those were attributes that got sold along with products in the new consumer culture. They all said, 'Use it and just throw it away.' They made throwing something away into not just something that you might do but into a virtue."
James Corbett, associate professor of marine and Earth studies, was quoted in an April 12 Sunday Times (UK) story about toxic emissions from ships. “The latest European research suggests shipping emissions are causing the premature deaths of around 39,000 people in the EU (European Union) each year,” he said.
Xinyan Deng, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, and Bo Cheng, doctoral student in engineering, were cited in an April 10 Associated Press story about research on the mechanics of flying animals.
Julio Carrion, acting chairperson of the Department of Political Science and International Relations, was quoted in an April 8 Wall Street Journal story about the sentencing of former president Alberto Fujimori by the Supreme Court of Peru. "It solidifies institutions and shows that the justice system works for big fish," Carrion said of the decision.
Alvina E. Quintana, associate professor of women's studies, was quoted in a recent El Tiempo Hispano story about the UD Women's Studies Program capstone, which focused on Afro-Latina oral history.
