Gerald J. Kauffman, director of the Water Resources Agency, wrote an opinion piece in the April 3 News Journal about the economics of water supplies in Delaware.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in an April 3 Wall Street Journal story about falling executive salaries in the wake of shrinking profits. Given a backlash over high pay, Elson said, “We are at a historic turning point in CEO compensation.”

Elson also was quoted in an April 1 Washington Post story about the government's role as an investor in GM, an April 1 Charlotte Observer story on challenges faced by Bank of America chairman and chief executive officer Ken Lewis, March 30 BusinessWeek and Wall Street Journal stories about corporate leadership changes, a March 27 News Journal story on reforms in the regulation of financial institutions, a March 25 Wall Street Journal story on efforts to provide shareholders more clout in the boardroom, and in two March 23 Compliance Week stories, one on Delaware corporate law and one on risk.

Steve Sciscione, associate director of UD's Bank of America Career Services Center, was quoted in an April 3 Community News story about job searches.

Yvette Freeman, a UD alumna, was featured in an April 2 News Journal story about her role on the television series ER.

David Brond, vice president of communications and marketing, was quoted in an April 1 News Journal story about the search for a new athletic director at UD. “Early signs are that this is a very desirable position,” said Brond, who is leading the search committee.

Doug Miller, associate professor of marine and earth studies, was quoted in an April 1 Bethany Beach Wave story about horseshoe crab populations in the state's inland bays and in the Delaware Bay.

Judith Herrman, associate professor of nursing, wrote an opinion piece in the March 28 News Journal about teen pregnancy. The op-ed noted a recent study by Paul Solano, associate professor in the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy.

David Legates, associate professor of geography, was featured in a March 27 Racine (Wisc.) Journal Times story about his views on climate change and the impact of humans. “You can't simply can't declare the debate's over,” Legates said. “We're not anywhere close to that point.”

UD students Alex Crespo, Frank DiPietrapaul, Brian Del Guercio, Tommy Stackhouse and Eric Cirulli were featured widely in television broadcasts for their role in helping pull a 60-year-old Newark woman to safety after her car became stuck on railroad tracks. They are members of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

Patrick Harker, UD president, was quoted in a March 25 News Journal story on the new Delaware Health Sciences Alliance, in which the University is a partner with Thomas Jefferson University, Christiana Care and Nemours.

Edgar Johnson, director of athletics, was featured in a March 24 News Journal story and a March 23 WDEL-AM story upon announcing plans to retire effective June 30.

Janice Barlow and Terry Schooley, assistant policy scientists in the Center for Community Research and Service, were quoted in a March 24 News Journal story on the Kids Count program, which reports on child poverty in the state.

Louis Hirsh, director of admissions, was quoted in a March 23 News Journal story on how the economy might shape freshman classes at universities and colleges this fall. "College admissions directors all across the country are flying blind this year," Hirsh told the newspaper. "We honestly don't know what the impact will be of the economy and that has us all sort of sitting on the edge of our seats waiting for May 1 to see exactly what will happen."

Sharon Merriman-Nai, co-manager of the National Center on Elder Abuse at the University of Delaware, was quoted discussing elder abuse and the role that nurses can play in its prevention in a March 1 RN Web article.

Scott Beale, an alumnus of UD's Institute for Public Administration, was featured in the Washington Post's WashBiz Blog for his Atlas Corps, which brings non-profit leaders from India and Columbia to work in the United States. He calls it a “Peace Corps in reverse.”
