4:22 p.m., April 14, 2009----Graduate students at the University of Delaware will volunteer their time and effort to a number of worthwhile causes in the Newark community in the coming weeks. If you haven't already signed up, there's still time to participate in the activities listed below.
“Last year, we had about 75 graduate students participate in a series of similar volunteer events,” says Bethany Willis Hepp, doctoral student in human development and family studies and vice president of the Graduate Student Senate.
“It is our hope to make this sort of community service a regular part of graduate student life on campus. To that end, we hope to attract a greater number of participants from across campus this year than last, and more next year than this!” Willis notes.
Food Bank Volunteerism Event, Thursday, April 16, 5-7 p.m. Head out to the Food Bank of Delaware's warehouse at 14 Garfield Way in Newark for an evening of canned-food fun. Wear comfortable clothing and avoid open-toed shoes. Carpooling is available. Contact George Szczepanski at [gszcz@udel.edu] for more information and to sign up.
City of Newark Community Clean-Up, Saturday, April 18, 8:40-11 a.m. Help keep our city beautiful! Meet at the City of Newark's Municipal Building at 220 Elkton Road at 8:40; then carpool to the assigned clean-up site. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and sneakers. Free food and drinks will be available after the event. For more information and to sign up, contact Christine Phelps at [cmphelps@udel.edu].
American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3 The UD Graduate Student Senate is proud to be working with the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life (http://www.relayforlife.org/udel) this spring. The event will be held in the Field House from Saturday, May 2, at 3 p.m., until Sunday, May 3, at 6 a.m. Graduate students are organizing teams for this event. For more information about how to join a team of graduate students or to form a team of your own, contact Bethany Willis Hepp at [bwillis@udel.edu].
