1:42 p.m., April 27, 2009----For an afternoon of enchantment, come to a special performance, “Fairytale on Ice,” starring UD's award-winning Collegiate Figure Skating Team and nine guest skaters, including international and national medalists. The show starts at 4 p.m., Saturday, May 9, in the Rust Ice Arena. General admission is $5 and $3 for students.
The show is designed for all ages and has something for everyone, with more than 35 performances, according to president Kandis Lynn Kovalsky.
The UD Collegiate Figure Skating Team has had a winning year.
The team placed second in the 2009 Intercollegiate National Championships at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. “It was a very close competition,” Kovalsky said, “and UD finished behind Boston by only 12 points, closer to winning than we have ever been. Dartmouth came in third, ending their seven-year winning streak.”
Prior to the championships, the UD Collegiate Figure Skating Team placed first in the 2008 Cornell University Intercollegiate Competition and second in the UD Intercollegiate Competition and the UPenn Intercollegiate Competition.
At the Intercollegiate National Championships, the following skaters were ranked first, second or third in final standings:
--Jazmyn Manzouri, first, Championship Senior Ladies Freeskating, and second, Senior Ladies Short Program;
--Kandis Kovalsky, second, Championship Senior Ladies Freeskating, and third, Senior Ladies Short Program;
--Marissa Marschall, first, Gold Argentine Tango, and second, International Ravensburger Waltz;
--Michele Colucci, first, Intermediate Ladies Short Program;
--Kristin Zinsmeister, first, Juvenile Fiesta Tango, and third, Intermediate Willow Waltz;
