Gov. Markell seeks advisory assistance from CDC

12:12 p.m., April 30, 2009----Delaware Gov. Jack Markell, in consultation with University of Delaware officials, on Thursday requested advisory assistance from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Markell spoke to Acting CDC Director Richard Besser Thursday morning and Dr. Besser agreed to the governor's request and is assembling a small team to provide advice in terms of the state's response to the probable H1N1 influenza cases at the University of Delaware.

“It is important that we remain calm, while taking prudent precautionary measures. We must be careful to keep this issue in perspective, the students that have tested probable for H1N1 influenza have only experienced mild symptoms. At the same time, our precautionary measures must also be driven by the best medical advice available,” Gov. Markell said. “To that end, I have asked the Centers for Disease Control to send some representatives to Delaware to provide on-the-ground advice. They have agreed and will compliment the team of professionals at the Division of Public Health, the University of Delaware and Christiana Care."

Public Health officials have been in consultation with the CDC through the week in terms of the state's response to the UD cases.

UD students who have flu-like symptoms should go to the on-campus Student Health Center, which is open 24 hours a day, or the temporary Public Health clinic on the UD campus, which reopened Thursday morning at 10 a.m. UD employees with medical questions or who are experiencing flu-like symptoms should contact their personal physicians.

Delaware residents who are experiencing any of these symptoms should seek care from their personal physicians.
