| Best Book in Urban Affairs Award
(The next Best Book award will be presented in 2011. The announcement of deadlines will be placed on the UAA website by September 1, 2010.)
The Urban Affairs Association (UAA) sponsors a biannual (every other year) award for the best book in the field of urban affairs/urban studies. The purpose of the award is to encourage high-quality research on urban issues and reward cogent writing on urban affairs. The first award was given in April 1999.
Eligibility
- To be eligible for the award, the
book must address a significant issue in urban affairs or contribute
to our understanding of urban issues and processes, and it must
approach its topic in a scholarly fashion.
- North American urban areas should
be the substantive focus, although comparative and cross-national
works that include urban areas of the U.S. or Canada are also
eligible.
- The book can be a theoretical argument,
or it can be based on empirical research.
- Its argumentative style should
be systematic, non-polemical, and situated within a relevant literature.
- Textbooks, dissertations, consultant
and research reports, edited volumes, and journal articles are
not eligible.
- The author does not have to be
a member of UAA.
- Previously nominated books can
be re-nominated if they fulfill all other eligibility guidelines.
Award
The award is presented at the conference of the Association in the spring. In addition to a plaque and $500 honorarium, the author(s) will receive complimentary conference registration and up to $500 in lodging or travel support.
Nomination
Books can be nominated by their author(s),
publisher, members of the Best book Award Committee, or members
of UAA. A previously nominated book can be
re-nominated. Specific directions and deadlines for submitting a nomination will be posted on the UAA website no later than Sept.1 during years when the award is given.
The Best Book Award Committee will make its decision and convey it to the Executive Director and Board Chair, after which the recipient and his or her publisher/nominator will be notified.
