Colloquy Title: Understanding Why Community Development Corporations (CDCs) Succeed or Fail

Speaker: Anonymous

Topic Category: Housing, Neighborhoods, Community Development

This session will focus on the factors found to be most essential in the success of CDCs. Speakers will draw these insights from various studies that they have engaged in, as well as case studies they have reviewed in the literature. Of particular importance will be insights drawn from case studies in Newark, NJ, San Francisco and Lowell, MA. Comments will include those on the effects of organizational missions, organizational competency, political capital and funding on successful outcomes. Also, speakers will reflect on what the word "success" means in these contexts and why some CDCs have not been as effective as others.
