Carpools
WHY CARPOOL?
Carpools are a convenient and sustainable way for students, faculty, and staff to commute to and from campus. With more gold permit holders opting to participate in a carpool, UD will be able to more effectively manage gold lot functionality, while also limiting frustration associated with searching for a parking space.
HOW IT WORKS
- A two-person carpool permit is a typical gold permit that is split between the participants.
- Three-person carpools will split the cost of a gold permit and will receive an additional 10% reduction.
- Carpools that would like to park in a gated lot will receive assignment preference.
- Each faculty/staff member of a carpool will also receive 40 free daily parking passes per year, for those days when carpooling is just not convenient.
- Student carpool members can register for the CFA Parking Garage and receive 20 free daily parking passes per year.
- In an emergency, registered carpoolers can arrange for a guaranteed ride home through RideShare Delaware. For more information, visit the RideShare Delaware site.
REGISTERING FOR A CARPOOL PERMIT
Each member of a carpool must complete a permit application and present it at the Parking Services Office (Please note: carpool registrants must come in to the Parking Services Office at the same time).
The Parking Services Office of the Department of Public Safety must be notified whenever an individual withdraws from a carpool to determine if the carpool membership has to be restructured to maintain eligibility for the carpool permit. An individual cannot register concurrently for a parking permit and also as a member of a carpool. Such dual permit registration is considered fraudulent.
For more information, please contact the Parking Services Office at (302) 831-1184.
Vanpools
WHY VANPOOL?
Vanpools are a sustainable way to ease frustration and traffic congestion, while also reducing commuting costs. VPSI is a national organization that has seen success on other college campuses nationwide, including the University of Pittsburgh, the University of California at Irvine, the University of Michigan and many others. Estimates show that vanpooling through VPSI eliminated 14 million vehicle-commuting trips in the nation, conserved 26 million gallons of fuel and kept 250,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere in 2008.
HOW IT WORKS
UD has joined efforts with VPSI, Inc., a private vanpool vendor, to begin operating vanpools on UD’s Newark campus. Vanpools consist of a group of five to nine people who agree to commute to work together on a regular basis in a van provided by VPSI, with a designated and alternate driver.
HOW TO GET STARTED
If you would like more information on vanpools, or would like to have your name placed on a potential vanpool list, please contact Adam Milavsky in the Office of the Executive Vice President at (302) 831-2200.
Biking at UD
A number of students and employees take advantage of community bikeways to ride to class or work. Many of Newark’s main arteries have either bike lanes or are marked so motorists know to share the road. There is also a city bikeway that runs roughly parallel to the Amtrak railroad tracks from Wyoming Road to west of South College Avenue. The University provides bike racks at many buildings.
Walkability on Campus
Walking offers a healthy and environmentally friendly way to get around campus, and the University has attractive and well-lit brick pathways radiating from the Green at central campus to residences to the north, east and west. For walkers on central campus, there is a pedestrian overpass to ease crossing of South College Avenue. For those moving south from the Laird Campus, there is a pedestrian bridge.
