Back up your files

It happens to all of us. We get lazy about making backup copies of our work until a disaster strikes. All it takes is one disaster and you, too, will become a convert.

          • A professor loses her last copy of her class syllabus and can't find the only disk with the electronic file.
          • Right before the department's general staff meeting, a staff member deletes the one copy of the annual report he had worked on for months.
          • End of the semester blues: The file for a student's term paper is stored on her computer's hard drive. The drive becomes unusable, and she is unable to turn in her paper on time.
Remember, make backup copies of work on a separate disk (or tape) from the original on a regular basis.

Need help deciding how to back up your files?

Do you need special hardware or software to back up data?

In some situations, you may need special hardware and software to make regularly scheduled backups of your work.

If you answer, "Yes," to any of the following questions, consider contacting the Technology Solutions Center to discuss your backup needs.

          • Does your system have more than 300 Megabytes of disk space?
          • Does your work require you to create lots of computer files?
          • Does your work require that you regularly create computer files that are too big to fit on one diskette?
          • Do you run a network server on which colleagues store their work?
