Academic Advisory Committee Meetings
April 30, 2002
Classroom Technology Demonstration -- Lonnie Hearn
This was a video of Lonnie Hearn demonstrating the classroom control devices
that UMS is installing now as well as an exciting
example of the animation capabilities that are now being used by UMS
staff. Kathy Troutman described a project they are working on
with the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources funded by the
USDA on transgenics and biotechnology. Faculty should
keep in mind the animation capabilities as they write proposals for
research and improvement of teaching grants.
Delaware DataMIL Presentation -- Dick Sacher
Dick demonstrated a web-based mapping tool that was developed at the University
and will give citizens of Delaware easy access to data
used in the state's land-use and natural resource planning and policy
decisions. For more details please see
http://www.datamil.udel.edu
and the article on page 2 of the April/May 2002 UpDate.
Campus printing and electronic communications -- Leila Lyons
Leila described an initiative to control the escalation of printing in
campus computing sites. A committee of representatives from the
Colleges, Library and IT was convened to address this issue on a campuswide
basis as opposed to having individual units implement
their own schemes, which might lead to changes in usage patterns and
inequitable distribution of costs. She also talked about
University communications being "electronic first" so that people would
be aware that they should read mail regularly so that they
are informed about University matters.
The majority of the committee members who entered into the discussion
recommended that Information Technologies NOT pursue or
advocate for actions that would severely restrict or eliminate
the option of hard-copy printing by students.
The question of a student printing fee was raised but Leila explained
that is not an option the University wants to pursue.
More details about the printing committee are at

Technology grants to support curriculum change
Leila drew the committee's attention to the article on page 25 of theApril/May
2002 UpDate that described a new grant program to encourage
faculty to use the latest technology to transform large, introductory
courses; introduce or enhance active learning approaches into a
department's curriculum; or develop and imprive LIFE, Pathways and
Capstone courses. More details can be found at
http://www.udel.edu/present/grant
She also pointed out some examples of faculty work dome in conjunction
with staff in the PRESENT at
http://present.smith.udel.edu/showcase/
Grant from Marriott Corp. to HRIM -- DeMicco
Fred DeMicco described plans for the Marriott Courtyard Hotel to be built
on the LairdCampus and scheduled to open on May 8, 2003.
The hotel will have 126 guest rooms as well as meeting rooms.
Technology will be integral as the role of wireless computing, tablet
PCs,
group decision-making software, and robotics in hotel management are
explored. The hotel, as well as Raub Hall and the Vita Nova
studio will have videoconferencing facilities. More information
can be found at
http://www.udel.edu/PR/NewsReleases/2002/feb/2-28-02/hotel.html
Videoconferencing infrastructure -- Lonnie Hearn
Lonnie Hearn described the current infrastructure for videoconferencing
at the University and a proposal which includes a central UD
videoconferencing bridge. The new infrastructure would
eliminate many incompatibility issues, yield cost savings, and provide
some
in-room operating advantages such as tracking cameras, and better graphics
display.
Meeting adjourned.
