University of Delaware Course Management System Policy and Procedures

Who may use?

The University of Delaware Course Management System (CMS) is only for the use of University employees and contractors who are teaching University approved courses.

Everyone who teaches using the University CMS must complete training provided by the University's Office of Information Technologies.  Students are eligible to take courses using the CMS if they are officially enrolled in the course at the time it is offered.

Who owns what?

University polices pertaining to copyright of intellectual property, software and instructional materials govern ownership of course content on the CMS.  The University owns the hardware and holds the software licenses required by the CMS.  These are administered by the Office of Information Technologies.  The Office of Information Technologies also provides and administers CMS access and authentication procedures.

Process

Training and Consultation
Information Technologies offers a series of classes on the use of the University's CMS.  The schedule of classes can be found on the Office of Information Technologies' professional development calendar.  Extensive online help is available in the CMS and consultation on use of the CMS is available by appointment with the PRESENT.  Participation in the course that is an "Introduction" to the CMS is required to receive a course account.

Access and Authentication
The CMS Course Request Form must be submitted at least three weeks prior to the start of the semester in which the course will be offered by the University employee that is teaching the course. The form is available through the CMS and requires the course ID.  Students enrolled in the course will be automatically added from the University's Student Information System.

Course Development
After attending the required training, an instructor can request a course account online in the CMS.  The course can then be developed by inclusion of CMS features that support the learning objectives of the course.

Course User
In addition to the University employee who is teaching the course and the students that are officially enrolled, the instructor may request course accounts for TA's, those who will be grading the course, and a guest account.

Course Archiving
Information Technologies will retain course materials for five years without use at which time retention will be reviewed with the author.  CMS courses may be retrieved according to the attached CMS Course Archive Schedule.
