Internet2 is a development effort currently
led by 170 U.S. research
universities working in partnership with industry leaders and
U.S. federal agencies to develop a new family of advanced Internet
applications and technologies.
The University of Delaware is one of the
32 charter members of Internet2. The Internet2 Project
is addressing the challenge of new academic requirements in research,
teaching, and learning through the following activities:
- creating a leading-edge network capability,
- enabling a new generation of applications, and
- working with industry and international partners to transfer
new technologies into the broad network community.
Application areas encompass all academic disciplines and include
digital libraries, virtual reality environments, collaboration
tools, large-scale distributed computation efforts, access to
remote instruments, data mining, and more.
The same partnership among academia,
industry and government that created today's multi-billion dollar
information technology industry will ensure the future benefits
of advanced networking to the global Internet.
