Using Fetch 4.0 at the University of Delaware
(Macintosh)

Fetch is a file transfer (FTP) client for Macintosh systems. The customized copy on the UD Network Connection CD, and available for download from the UD Software Distribution web site, is licensed for use by University students, faculty and staff. If you read the help files included with Fetch 4.0, you can teach yourself to use Fetch for a variety of file management tasks. This document gives you a quick introduction to transferring files with Fetch 4.0.

Installing Fetch 4.0

  1. Copy Fetch to your computer from the Network Connection CD or from the UD Software Distribution web site.
  2. Locate the icon for the compressed version of Fetch on your computer's hard drive or desktop.

Double-click the icon to "unstuff" (uncompress) the files. When the files have uncompressed, you should see an icon for a Fetch folder:

  3. Open the folder.

The folder contains the icon for the Fetch program and some additional files. The first time you run Fetch, you will need the information in the Fetch 4.0 UD Serial Number file.

  4. Double-click the Fetch icon to start the program.
  5. The first time you run Fetch, you'll see a welcome screen.

    Click Enter Serial.

  6. When prompted, provide the licensing information as shown found in the Fetch 4.0 UD Serial Number file in the Fetch folder. Use zeros (UD's serial number does not contain any letter "o" characters.), numerals, and UPPER-CASE LETTERS when typing the serial number.

  7. Click OK.
  8. You can proceed with the directions for Starting Fetch 4.0, beginning at step 2, using the New Connection window.

Starting Fetch 4.0

  1. Open the Fetch 4.0 folder, and double-click the Fetch icon.

  2. The version of Fetch customized for use at the University of Delaware makes the University's central UNIX server the default remote computer to which Fetch will connect. Provide your user ID (your UNIX and e-mail username) and password as indicated; then click OK.

You will ordinarily begin your Fetch session working in the "home" directory on your account on the remote computer. If you wish to begin your Fetch session by working in another directory on the remote computer, click on the small triangle just below the "Password:" box. Provide the path for that directory in the space indicated; then click OK.

You may also use Fetch to connect to other file servers -- including ones that support "Anonymous FTP." Provide the name of the remote host computer, your user ID and password. If you are connecting to an anonymous FTP server, use "anonymous" as your user ID and your valid e-mail address as your password. Then click OK.

Transferring Files

When you transfer files, you put (upload) the files to the remote host or you get (download) the files from the remote host.

Putting files: uploading files from your Macintosh to the remote host

  1. Click Put Files.

If you have many files to transfer, instead of clicking Put Files, select Put Folders and Files from the Remote pull-down menu.

  2. Highlight the file or files you wish to upload, then click Choose.

  3. Be sure that you select the appropriate file type for the transfer. For example, if you are transferring a JPEG file for use on the World Wide Web, select "Raw Data" as the file type.

Fetch's help files contain more information on the various file types.

Getting files: downloading files from a remote host to your Macintosh

Downloading files is a similar operation. You can highlight a file on the list of files at the remote host, then click Get... or Get File.

If you have many files to transfer, you can select Get Directories and Files from the Remote pull-down menu.

You can move through the folders (directories) on the remote host by clicking on a folder name. For example, here is where you begin browsing when you use Fetch to connect to Apple's anonymous FTP site:

The following screen shows the path you would have to follow to find the appropriate update to Apple's iMovie software:
