Webmail Direct: Delete messages

Delete messages from the Inbox view

There are two ways to delete e-mail messages from your Inbox, depending upon the way your trash preferences are set up:

  • Delete messages using the Trash feature (default)

    1. In the Inbox window, select the check box next to message or messages you want to delete.
    2. Click the Delete button in the bar above the message list. This moves the messages to your Trash folder. Messages remain in the Trash folder until you empty the trash.
Important Note: Messages are automatically deleted after they have been in the trash for 14 days.

To retrieve deleted messages, click Folders and then Trash. Find the messages you want to keep and move them to a different folder.

    3. Click [Empty] next to the Trash link on the Webmail Direct menu bar to permanently delete the messages in your Trash folder.
  • Delete messages using the Compact feature

Note: To delete messages in this way, you must first change your Preferences so that Delete to Trash is set to No.

    1. In the Inbox window, select the check box next to the message or messages you want to delete.
    2. Make sure Deleted appears in the drop-down list next to the Mark button, then click Mark. The Deleted icon (Deleted) appears next to the messages.

To undelete a message, select it and choose Undelete from the Mark drop-down list, then click Mark.
    3. Click Compact on the Webmail Direct menu bar. This permanently deletes the marked messages. Note: Messages will remain in your Inbox until you click Compact.

Note: To delete a large number of messages at once:

  1. On the Webmail Direct menu bar, click Preferences.
  2. In the Message Count box, set the number to several hundred (or to the number you want to delete) then click OK.
  3. Delete the messages as you usually do. When you finish, reset the Message Count to your usual number.

Delete a message from the message window

  1. Click Delete at the top or bottom of the message window. Depending upon how you have set your Trash preferences, your message will either be marked as deleted or moved to the Trash folder.
  2. Remember: If you are using the Delete to Trash feature, messages will remain in your Trash folder until you click Empty. If you are using the Compact feature, deleted messages will remain in your Inbox and count against your e-mail quota until you click Compact.
