How to Manage Your Inbox Disk Space Limit
How to decrease your INBOX disk space use
if you work with Pine Mail

The following instructions are written to help individuals who work with Pine Mail use the application to reduce their INBOX disk space use.

General instructions for Pine Mail
  1. Log in to your UDelNet account through the Secure Shell (SSH) application.

(If you do not have a copy of this application on your computer, you can download a free copy for a Windows computer or a free copy for a Macintosh computer from the UDeploy web site.)

  2. To see the size of your Inbox, at the copland.udel.edu (%) prompt, type

    ls  -l  /var/mail/username

where username is your UDelNet ID. (Your UDelNet ID is only your username, not your full UD e-mail address. Therefore, do not include the @udel.edu ending.)

  1. Press ENTER. You will see a number that tells you how much disk space your INBOX is using. See the example below.

Example

If your UDelNet ID (username) was "dottie," at the copland.udel.edu (%) prompt, you would type

ls  -l  /var/mail/dottie

and then press ENTER.

You would receive a system response similar to the following:

-rw-------    1 dottie    other    3103774    May 18 10:45    /var/mail/dottie

This information indicates that dottie has 3,103,774 bytes of data in her INBOX. Remember, 1,000,000 bytes of data is approximately 1MB. Therefore, dottie has over 3MB of data in her INBOX. She would need to delete (remove) e-mail messages from her account until the disk space usage is below 2MB (approximately 2,000,000 bytes).
  1. If your INBOX is over 2MB, you will need to delete (move) messages from your INBOX.
  2. At the copland.udel.edu (%) prompt, type

    pine

  3. Press ENTER.
  4. Delete and expunge messages you don't need from your INBOX.
  5. Press Q to exit Pine Mail.
  6. Recheck your INBOX disk space use.
  7. If your INBOX still exceeds its disk space limit (2MB), start Pine Mail again and continue to delete and expunge messages from your INBOX.
  8. When your account is below 2MB, at the copland.udel.edu (%) prompt, type

    exit

  9. Press ENTER.
  10. Close any windows you no longer need.
