How to Start the Pine Mail Program


Important Note
Before you can use the Pine Mail program, you must activate your UDelNet account. You activate your account by creating a UDelNet ID (also referred to as a username) and a password on the University of Delaware Network page. (Follow the instructions on the Network page.)

  1. After you activate your UNIX account, log in to the central e-mail server ("mail.udel.edu"). If you need help logging in, link to the Secure Shell (SSH) instructions.
  2. After you log in to the central e-mail server, at the UNIX prompt (which is represented by the percent sign [%]), type

    pine

  3. Press ENTER.

    If this is the first time you're using the Pine Mail program, you will see a Welcome screen, which should look similar to the following:

  5. Read this information and then press ENTER. (You will not see a screen like this again unless the version of the program changes.)
  6. If this is not the first time you've used the Pine Mail program, when you start the program, you will see the Main Menu screen, which should look similar to the following:

    The options you can use on this screen are displayed down the left side of the screen as well as across the bottom of the screen.

    On screens other than the Main Menu screen, the options that you can use are displayed across the bottom of the screen only.

    Note
    Pressing the M key at any time—except while composing or responding to a message—returns you to the Main Menu screen.
