Uninstall/reinstall Netscape

Remember: You may not have to perform all of these steps. After each step, check to see if the problem still occurs. If it does, go to the next step. If you've completed all the steps, call the Help Center at 831-6000, Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.

  1. Disable McAfee Antivirus Software
    1. Click the "Start" button on the desktop. Choose "Settings | Control Panel".
    2. Double Click the "VirusScan" icon.
    3. Click the "Stop" button on the "Service" tab.
    4. Continue with the next step.

  2. Close all open Netscape applications.
    1. Go to "File | Exit" to close all windows and exit Netscape.
    2. Continue with the next step.

  3. Verify nsnotify.exe (mail notification program) is not running.
    1. Press "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" to bring up the Task Manager.
    2. If Nsnotify comes up on the list of tasks, select "Nsnotify" and click the "End Task" button.
    3. If Nsnotify is not listed, click "Cancel".
    4. Continue with the next step.

  4. Uninstall Netscape

    NOTE: Before you uninstall Netscape, be sure that you either have the Internet Explorer program (choose the Start button on the desktop. Select Programs/Internet Explorer) on your system or that you have the UD Connection CD which contains the Netscape program so you can reinstall it. You can obtain the UD Connections CD from the Bookstore at a cost of $4.

    1. Click the "Start" button on the desktop. Choose "Settings | Control Panel".
    2. Double click on "Add/Remove Programs".
    3. Select "Netscape Communicator" from the Install/Uninstall window.
    4. Click the "Add/Remove" button.
    5. Continue with the next step.

  5. Download Netscape.
    1. Click on the Windows Software link.
    2. Click on "Download Netscape Communicator v4.79"
    3. Click on "Save File".
    4. By the "Save in" dialog box, click the drop down arrow and select "Desktop".
    5. Click "Save".
    6. Continue with the next step.

  6. Reinstall Netscape
    1. Find the .exe file that you save in the step above.
    2. Open Windows Explorer. Click the "Start" button on the desktop. Choose "File | Programs |Windows Explorer".
    3. Double click on "Desktop" on the left side of the window.
    4. Double click on the .exe filename.
    5. Click "OK" and "Yes". Accept the defaults.
    6. Continue with the next step.

  7. Open Netscape.
    1. Verify that your Netscape configuration (preferences) are correct.
    2. Continue with the next step.

  8. Enable McAfee Antivirus Software
    1. Click the "Start" button on the desktop. Choose "Settings | Control Panel".
    2. Double Click the "VirusScan" icon.
    3. Click the "Start" button on the "Service" tab.
    4. Check to see if Netscape runs properly. If it does not, continue with the next step.

  9. Delete files in the c:\windows\temp directory
    1. Close all open programs.
    2. Open Windows Explorer. Click the "Start" button on the desktop. Choose "File | Programs | Windows Explorer".
    3. Go to the "View" menu, and select "Folder Options".
    4. Select the "View" tab.
    5. Under hidden files, select "Show all files".
    6. Click "OK".
    7. Click on the plus sign ("+") to the left of (C:).
    8. Click on the plus sign ("+")to the left of Windows folder.
    9. Click on the "Temp" directory.
    10. From the "Edit" menu, choose "Select All".
    11. Go to the "File" menu, and select "Delete".
    12. You may be prompted to click "Yes" or "Yes to all" to confirm file deletion.
    13. Choose "File | Close" to close the Windows Explorer program.
