Configuring Netscape Communicator's Messenger
Application
(version 4.7x) on a Macintosh Computer
Preface
Prerequisites
To use these instructions, you should have experience using the
Macintosh operating system.
You also need to understand the
basic features of a graphical user interface, including how to use
windows, buttons, and dialog boxes. You must also have the following
items:
- An active UNIX e-mail account on the central UNIX mail server
(mail.udel.edu). You
must know your UDelNet ID and the correct password for your account. If
you do not currently have an active UNIX e-mail account, you can
activate it on the web from the UD Network page.
Your account will be active immediately.
- A computer connected to the Internet: Either a direct connection using
Ethernet or a connection via a modem using the Point-to-Point Protocol
(PPP) application.
- Netscape Communicator version 4.7x
for the Macintosh. The application must already be installed on
your Macintosh computer to use these instructions. These instructions
do not tell you how to install the application: They explain how to
configure the Messenger application to use e-mail.
UNIX
Computer Accounts
All University of Delaware faculty, staff, and students are eligible for
an account on the central UNIX mail server. This account is a privilege
granted to you by the University. You must act responsibly when you use
it, or you can lose this privilege. If you are uncertain about the proper
use of computing resources, you can find the Policy for
Responsible Computing online.
Activating Your UNIX E-mail Computer Account
You can activate your UNIX e-mail computer account on the web from the UD Network
page. Your account will be active immediately.

Introduction
Electronic Communication
Electronic communication enables you
to use a computer to correspond with others: You send an electronic mail
(e-mail) message or a file (attachment) from your computer to your
correspondent's computer. More specifically, using Netscape
Communicator's Messenger application, you log into your account on
the central UNIX mail server (mail.udel.edu) to receive and send messages
to your correspondent's account.
Netscape Communicator's Messenger Application
Netscape Messenger is one application in the Netscape Communicator suite of applications. It is a powerful, easy-to-use e-mail application that uses a graphical user interface with multiple buttons, windows, and dialog boxes.
Configuring Netscape Messenger to Work with the University's Central
UNIX Mail Server
To use Messenger efficiently, you must configure the application in the following two ways:
