Description: Netscape Communicator
Netscape Communicator is a suite
(group) of applications. One of the applications within Communicator is
an e-mail application called Netscape "Messenger."
Messenger is a powerful, easy-to-use e-mail application, which uses a
graphical user interface with buttons, windows, and dialog boxes.
Some features or options you may have used in the EMC2 e-mail
application are not
currently available in Netscape Communicator. These features are the
following:
-
a shared workgroup calendar
-
a conversion process for private e-mail lists (address books)
However, Information Technologies (IT) staff are currently working to
provide equivalent features.

Activate your UNIX e-mail account
(create your UDelNet ID and password)

Netscape Communicator application (version 4.5)

Activate your UNIX e-mail account
To activate your UNIX e-mail account, you will need to know the following
information to authenticate your identity to the central e-mail server:
-
your Social Security Number (SSN)
-
your 4-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN)
If you do not have or have forgotten your PIN, contact your departmental
Personnel Records Office (PRO) contact.
You can activate your account on the University's "UDelNet Connections"
web page (see link below).
Although your account will be active immediately, for the first 24 hours,
you must log in using your pre-assigned, 5-digit user number (which you
will
see on the
web pages as you work through the process). When you see your
pre-assigned, 5-digit user
number, write it down, so you don't forget it.
Some
information before you begin:
-
Read the information on the screen that explains where to type your
SSN and PIN. In the dialog box that appears, you will see two fields--one
for your
"Name"
and one for your "Password."
Important Note: For your "Name" type your SSN, and for your
"Password" type your PIN.
-
Click on the button in the lower left-hand corner of the page labeled
"Proceed."
-
Thereafter, follow the instructions on the screen. This process will
take you step-by-step through creating your UDelNet ID (from your pre-
assigned, 5-digit user number) to creating your password for your
account).

Download, install, and configure the Netscape
Communicator
application (version 4.5)
If you do not have much experience downloading files, you may want to read
"About
Downloading From the Web" before you begin.
You will also find a link
to Netscape's beginner's guide to downloading files on this page.
You can download the latest version of Netscape Communicator from the
University's software distribution web
page.
- After you download the correct version of the application, you must install the software. Read the software download page
for installation instructions.
- After you install the application, you must configure it to work with
the University's central e-mail server "mail.udel.edu" (also called
"copland.udel.edu"). You can find
configuration instructions at the following links:
Note: On March 18, 1999, a pre-configured version of Netscape
Navigator 4.5 was made available on the University's software
distribution web page.
This version is already configured to work properly with the
University's central UNIX e-mail server. Therefore, you will not have to
do the
complete configuration of the application yourself. (Although you
will have to do some minor configurations such as entering your
UDelNet ID and e-mail address.)
Remember, the pre-configured version
was available on March 18, 1999. If you downloaded the application
before that date, you will have to follow the complete configuration
instructions yourself--using the link to the
instructions above.
Otherwise, link to these instructions for the
pre-configured
instructions for Windows
95/98 computers.
