How to change the preset UD home page
on a Windows 2000/XP computer

Because the version of Mozilla available from the UDeploy site is customized for UD, some of the preference settings have been set to remain fixed.

If you try to change one of these settings using the Mozilla Preferences feature, the change will take effect only during that work session. When you restart Mozilla, the setting will return to the original.

You can change the setting to take effect even after Mozilla is restarted, but to do so, you must manually edit a file called user.js.

One of these settings is the home page, which is set to UD's home page (www.udel.edu). Follow these steps to change this setting:

  1. Your computer must be set to view all files for you to make this change. The default setting for this option on a Windows 2000/XP computer is off. You can use Windows Explorer to turn this option on. Open Windows Explorer as you normally do or by following these steps:
    1. Click Start | (All) Programs.
    2. Click Accessories.
    3. Click Windows Explorer.
    4. From the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    5. Click the View tab.
    6. Double-click the folder labeled Hidden files and folders.
    7. Click the radio button in front of the Show hidden files and folders option.
    8. Click OK.
  2. Working in the left-side column of the Explorer window, click the following path to the user.js file:

    C:\Documents and Settings\[Log-in Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\[Mozilla_Profile]

  3. Double-click the xxxxxxxx.slt folder.
  4. In the right-side column of the window, right-click on the file named user.js (or the one named user).
  5. Click Edit. You will see a text file open in a text-editing window.
  6. Insert a // (a double slash) and a space in front of the line coded for the home page.
  7. To change the home page, the edited line should read:

    // user_pref("browser.startup.homepage", "http://www.udel.edu")

  8. From the File menu, click Save.
  9. From the File menu, click Exit.
  10. Close Windows Explorer.
  11. Open the Mozilla program.
  12. From the Edit menu, click Preferences.
  13. In the Home Page Location field, type the full URL address of the home page you want Mozilla to open to.
  14. Click OK.
  15. Close the Mozilla program. (The change will not take effect until the program is restarted).
  16. Start the Mozilla program. The URL you typed in the Home Page Location field will now be Mozilla's home page until you change it.
