How to convert from Netscape 4.7x to Mozilla 1.7.x
on a Windows 2000/XP computer

To convert from Netscape 4.7x to Mozilla 1.7.x, you must follow these steps in the order in which they appear:

  1. Set your computer to view all files.
  2. Use Windows Explorer to check for an existing Mozilla profile folder and move it to the desktop.
  3. Install Mozilla 1.7.x.
  4. Manage your Netscape 4.7x profile and UDelNet e-mail settings.
  5. Move your Netscape 4.7x personal address book.
  6. Import your Netscape 4.7x bookmark file.
  7. Import your Netscape 4.7x local e-mail folders.

Set your computer to view all files

Your computer must be set to view all files for you to view your profile folder if one is on your computer. A Windows XP/2000 computer does not have this setting as its default. You can use Windows Explorer to turn this option on. Open Windows Explorer as you normally do or by following these steps:

  1. Click Start | Programs.
  2. Click Accessories.
  3. Click Windows Explorer.
  4. From the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  5. Click the View tab.
  6. Double-click the folder labeled Hidden files and folders.
  7. Click the radio button in front of the Show hidden files and folders option.
  8. Click OK.

Use Windows Explorer to check for an existing Mozilla profile folder and move it to the desktop
  1. Click Start | (All) Programs.
  2. Click Accessories.
  3. Click Windows Explorer.
  4. In the left-hand column of the Windows Explorer window, click the following path to the Mozilla folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\[Log-in Name]\Application Data\Mozilla

  5. With the right mouse button, click the Mozilla folder.
  6. Click Cut.
  7. Minimize the Windows Explorer window.
  8. On a blank area of the desktop, click the right mouse button.
  9. Click Paste. The Mozilla folder should now appear on the desktop.

Install Mozilla 1.7.x
  1. Install Mozilla 1.7.x.

Manage your Netscape 4.7x profile and UDelNet e-mail settings
  1. Click your computer's desktop. You should see an icon on the desktop—Mozilla 1.7.x Navigator—which looks similar to the following:

        

  2. Double-click the icon. Caution: You will see a prompt asking you to convert your Netscape 4.7x profile—Do not select convert profile.
  3. Click the Manage Profiles button.
  4. At the Select User Profile dialog box, click Create Profile.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Click Finish to accept default user as the username.
  7. Click Finish.
  8. At the Select User Profile dialog box, click Start Mozilla.
  9. From the Window menu, click Mail & Newsgroups.
  10. The Email Account radio button should be selected.
  11. Click Next.
  12. Type your name (e.g., Jane Smith) and e-mail address (e.g., jane@udel.edu).
  13. Click Next.
  14. Click the radio button in front of IMAP.
  15. In the Incoming mail server field, type mail.udel.edu.
  16. Click Next.
  17. In the User Name window, your UDelNet ID should be entered in the Incoming User Name field.
  18. Click OK.
  19. Click Next.
  20. Click Next on the Account Name dialog box.
  21. Click Finish.
  22. When you see the prompt requesting a password, type your UDelNet e-mail account password.
  23. Close both the Mozilla Mail and Navigator programs.

Move your Netscape 4.x personal address book
  1.  Export your address book from Netscape 4.x
    1. Start Netscape Navigator 4.x.
    2. From the Communicator menu, click Address Book.
    3. In the left-hand column, click Personal Address Book.
    4. From the File menu, click Export.
    5. In the Save in field, use the drop-down arrow to select the desktop.
    6. In the File name field, type a name for the address book.
    7. In the Save as type field, make sure LDIF (*ldif) is selected.
    8. Click Save.
    9. Close the Address Book window.
    10. Close Netscape Navigator 4.x
  2. Import your address book to Mozilla 1.7.x
    1. Start the Mozilla Mail program.
    2. Type your password for your UDelNet e-mail account.
    3. Click OK.
    4. From the Windows menu, click Address Book.
    5. From the Tools menu, click Import.
    6. Choose the Address Books radio button.
    7. Click Next.
    8. Click Text file (LDIF, .tab., csv, txt).
    9. Click Next.
    10. Locate the *.ldif file you saved on the desktop—the file you named—from the export instructions above.
    11. Click Open.
    12. Click OK in the Import Address Book dialog box.
    13. Click Finish.
    14. Your Netscape 4.x address book should now appear as an address book in Mozilla. The address book entries may be dragged to the Mozilla Personal Address Book.

Import your Netscape 4.x bookmark file  
  1. Start Mozilla Navigator.
  2. From the Bookmarks menu, click Manage Bookmarks.
  3. From the Tools menu, click Import.
  4. In the Look in dialog box, click the drop-down arrow to browse to the folder named

    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\[Log-in Name].

  5. Click once on bookmark.htm (i.e., the bookmark file).
  6. Click Open.
  7. Close the Bookmark Manager window.
  8. Close the Mozilla Navigator program.

Import your Netscape 4.7x local e-mail folders
  1. From within Mozilla Mail, click Tools | Import.
  2. Click the Mail radio button.
  3. Click the Address Book radio button.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Click Communicator 4.x.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Click Finish.
