What and where is my Mozilla profile?

To the Mozilla program, your profile folder is your "identity." It contains your bookmark file, mail and news files, local mail, account settings, stored passwords, personal address book, and preferences.

Different Windows operating systems save your profile folder in different locations on your computer. In general, the following directory path is where you can find your profile folder:

  • Windows 2000 or XP system
    C:\Documents and Settings\[Log-in Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\

How to backup your profile on a Windows 2000/XP system

Your bookmark file, local mail, and personal address book are stored on your desktop computer. If your hard drive crashes or your profile becomes corrupted, these files may be overwritten or lost. You can prevent data loss by properly backing up your Mozilla profile folder.

Note
To access your profile folder on a Windows 2000/XP computer, your system must be set to view all files. On Windows 2000 and XP systems, the default setting is not set to view all files.

If your system is not currently set to view all files, you can use Windows Explorer to enable this option.

  1. Open Windows Explorer as you normally do or by following these steps:
    1. Click Start | (All) Programs.
    2. Click Accessories.
    3. Click Windows Explorer.
    4. From the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    5. Click the View tab.
    6. Double-click the folder labeled Hidden files and folders.
    7. Click the radio button in front of the Show hidden files and folders option.
    8. Click OK.
  2. Click the following path to the profiles folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\[Log-in Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\

  3. Copy the Profiles folder to a zip disk, a CD-RW disk, or to an alternative location on your hard drive.

Note
If you copy the Profiles folder to a different location on your hard drive, it will not be protected if your hard drive crashes. Therefore, it is safer to copy it to an external medium such as a zip disk.
