Majordomo Mailing List Instructions

How to Request

Majordomo mailing lists use software called "majordomo" which automates the subscription process for the list owner.

Send the following information in an email message to Kate Webster when you make your mailing list request:

  1. Name and UDelNet ID of requestor
  2. Name and UDelNet ID of list maintainer
  3. Mailing list name (must have a -hyphen- in the name)
  4. Brief description of purpose of mailing list
  5. Type of mailing list: designate "Majordomo" here.
  6. Name of faculty/staff advisor if this list is for a student group. Also, please cc: the advisor when you email me your request.

Note: Requests for lists from student groups need approval from the Student Activities and Programs office prior to submitting a request.

For a majordomo mailing list, once you are notified that the list has been setup, you'll need to create a configuration file and an information page using the "config", "newconfig", and "newinfo" commands. Please allow one week for mailing list creation.

To be added to this list, users send a message to majordomo@udel.edu with the following information listed in the body of the mail message: subscribe your-list-name

How to Use

Once your mailing list has been created and you have been given the password for the list, you will need to make changes in the list configuration file to meet your specifications and create a message of welcome or information for new subscribers. In the instructions below, replace your-listname with the name of your majordomo mailing list and listpassword with the password for your list.

To configure your list and set up a welcome message (information file), follow these steps:

1. Send e-mail to majordomo@udel.edu with the following command as the only line in the body of the message: config your-listname listpassword

2. Majordomo returns the configuration file to you -- save it to a file and make any necessary changes.

The configuration file is self-documenting -- each parameter is explained in the paragraph preceding it. You should add a brief description that will become part of the mail headers that list subscribers will see. You may also wish to change the subscription policy and/or moderate the list.

When you finish editing, make sure that the documentation lines (starting with #) do not split into lines that do not start with #. Save the edited file.

3. Send e-mail to majordomo@udel.edu with the following command as the first line in the body of the message:

and follow this line with your edited configuration file.

Keep the configuration file you created as a backup -- you may need to resend it, or you may wish to make changes at a later date without having to start from the defaults.

4. To create the welcome message, send e-mail to majordomo@udel.edu with the following command as the first line in the body of the message:

and follow with the text you would like new subscribers to see. The text may be a simple welcome message or it may include useful information for new subscribers. If you wish to include instructions on how to unsubscribe from a majordomo list at the University of Delaware, tell your subscribers to send mail to majordomo@udel.edu with the command unsubscribe your-listname as the only line in the body of the message.

After the last line of your welcome message, type

on a line by itself.

5. Successful completion of steps 3 and 4 will generate self-explanatory responses from majordomo. If majordomo returns error messages, repeat steps 2-4 as needed.

6. To test your settings and your welcome message in one step. subscribe yourself to your list by sending e-mail to majordomo@udel.edu with the following command as the only line in the body of message:
