Launching the Mac OS X Mail client
- Double-click the hard drive icon.
- Click Column View as shown in the following graphic:

- Click Applications.
- Click Mail to launch Mac OS X Mail.

You can also launch Mac OS X Mail by clicking the Mail icon in the OS X dock.
Configuring Mac OS X's Mail client
Mail configuration instructions for use with the University of Delaware's mail server (mail.udel.edu) are listed in the table below. click the link that corresponds to your current Mac OS X version. (To determine what Mac OS X version you are using, from the Apple menu, click About This Mac).

Account Setup--OS X 10.3.x (Panther)
- You will see the Welcome to Mail window, which should look similar to the following:
- In the Full Name field, type your full name.
- In the Email Address field, type your complete e-mail address (including the @udel.edu).
- In the Incoming Mail Server field, type mail.udel.edu.
- From the drop-down arrow to the right of Account Type, click IMAP.
- In the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) field, type mail.udel.edu.
- In the User Name field, type your UDelNet ID (your e-mail address without the @udel.edu).
- Do not type your password in this window.
- Click OK.
- If you see an Import Mailboxes window, click No.

- From the Mail menu, click Preferences.

- Click the Accounts icon at the top of the window.
- Click the Account Information tab. You will see the Accounts window, which should look similar to the following:
- In the Description field, type UD Mail.
- Verify that all other information in the window is correct.
- Click the Server Settings button.
- Click the checkbox in front of Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to insert a check mark.
NOTE: In the Server port field, you will see the number 25. If you have difficulty sending mail using this port, highlight the number and type 587 in the field to change the port number from 25 to 587.
- From the Authentication drop-down menu, click None.
- Type your User Name and Password in the appropriate fields.
- Click OK.
Return to Configuration Table
- Click the Special Mailboxes tab.
- Set your window to match the one shown above.
- Click the Advanced tab. Make sure no text is typed in the IMAP Path Prefix field.
- Click in the checkbox in front of Use SSL to insert a check mark. The port number will change to 993. The window should now look similar to the following:
- Close the Accounts window.
- Save your changes if asked.
Junk Mail--OS X 10.3.x (Panther)
When you start using Mail, it is in "training" mode. Any message that appears to be junk will be displayed in a different color in the Inbox. You can help Mail correctly identify messages as junk mail by identifying them as such.
- To identify a "junk" message, select the message, then click the Junk icon* in the toolbar. If a message has been incorrectly identified as junk, select the message and click the Not Junk icon.
(*If you don't have a Junk icon in your toolbar, from the View menu, click Customize Toolbar. Drag the Junk icon to your toolbar and then click Done.)
- From the Mail menu, click Preferences.
- Click the Junk Mail icon. You will see the Junk Mail window, which should look similar to the following:
- Click the radio button in front of Move it to Junk mailbox (Automatic).
- You must quit Mail for the change to take effect. From the Mail menu, click Quit.
- Relaunch the Mail application and type your password when prompted.

LDAP Server Setup--OS X 10.3.x (Panther)

- The LDAP Directory Service allows you to set up directories in which you can search for e-mail addresses of correspondents. Using the following instructions, you will set up an LDAP Directory Service for the University of Delaware.
- From within Mail, click the Composing icon.
- In the Composing window, click in the checkbox in front ofAutomatically complete addresses.
- Click the Configure LDAP button.
- If you have an existing UD LDAP service configured, delete it by clicking once to select the item in the list box, then click the minus "-" button in the lower-left corner of the window.

- Click the plus "+" button to add a new LDAP service.
- In the Server Info window, type the following information in the required fields:
- Name: UD LDAP
- Server: ldap.udel.edu
- Search Base: o=udel.edu
- Click the Save button.
- Click Done.
- Close the Composing window.
When you create a new mail message, begin typing a recipient's name in the To field. Mail will query the LDAP server and provide you with a drop-down list of potential addresses. Select the desired address using the up/down arrow keys on your keyboard and pressing the RETURN/ENTER key or by using the mouse.

Return to Configuration Table
- In the Welcome to Mail window, type the information as shown below.
- Select <Your Name> in the Full Name field and replace it with your full name.
- Provide your complete e-mail address, including the @udel.edu.
- Both the Incoming and Outgoing mail servers are mail.udel.edu.
- Select IMAP from the drop-down menu for Account Type.
- Replace <username> with your UDelNet ID (your e-mail address without the @udel.edu).
Do not provide your password in this window unless you are sure no one else will have access to your computer.
- Click OK.
- On the Import Mailboxes screen, click No.

- From the Mail menu, click Preferences.

- click the Accounts icon and the Account Information tab. Change the text in the Description text box to "UD Mail."
Verify that your account information is correct.
- Click the Server Settings button.
- Under Server port, check the box in front of Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
NOTE: In the Server port field, you will see the number 25. If you have difficulty sending mail using this port, highlight the number and type 587 in field to change the port number from 25 to 587.
- From the Authentication drop-down menu, click None.
- Type your User Name and Password in the appropriate fields.
- Click OK.
- click the Special Mailboxes tab.

- Set your screen to match the one shown above. You can use the drop-down menu available for each mailbox category to change the option for how quickly files are deleted.
- Click the Advanced tab. Make sure no text is typed in the box next to IMAP Path Prefix, and put a check mark in the checkbox in front of Use SSL. The port number will change to 993.
- Close the Accounts window.
- Save the changes if asked.
Junk Mail--OS X 10.4.x (Tiger)

Account Setup--OS X 10.5.x (Leopard)
- You will see the Welcome to Mail window, which should look similar to the following:
- In the Full Name field type your full name.
- In the Email Address field, type your complete e-mail address (including the @udel.edu).
- Do not type your password in this window. The window should now look similar to the following:
- Click Continue. You will see the Incoming Mail Server window, which should look similar to the following:
- From the drow-down arrow to the right of Account Type, click IMAP.
- In the Description field, type a name for your mail account (e.g., UD Mail).
- In the Incoming Mail Server field, type mail.udel.edu.
- In the User Name field, type your UDelNet ID (i.e., your e-mail address without the @udel.edu).
- Do not type your password in this window. The window should now look similar to the following:
- Click Continue. You will see the Outgoing Mail Server window, which should look similar to the following:
- In the Description field, type the description again.
- In the Outgoiong Mail Server field, type mail.udel.edu.
- Click in the checkbox in front of Use only this server to insert a check mark.
- The window should now look similar to the following:
- Click Continue. You will see the Account Summary window, which should look similar to the following:
- If all the details are correct, click Create to create your e-mail account.
- If you see an Import Mailboxes window, click No.

- If you see a login window, similar to the following, type your password.
- From the Mail menu, click Preferences.
- Click the Accounts icon at the top of the window.
- Click the Account Information tab. You will see the Accounts window, which should look similar to the following:
- Verify that your account information is correct.
- From the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) pull-down menu, click Edit Server List.
- The Accounts window should now look similar to the following:
- Click the Advanced tab. The window should now look similar to the following:
- Click the radio button in fron of Use custom port.
- Type the number 25 into the empty field.
NOTE: In the Server port field, you will see the number 25. If you are using an outside service provider and have difficulty sending mail using this port, highlight the number and type 587 in field to change the port number from 25 to 587.
- Click in the checkbox in front of Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to insert a check mark.
- From the Authentication drop-down menu, click None.
- Click OK.
- Click the Mailbox Behaviors tab. The Accounts window should now look similar to the following:
- Set your screen to match the one shown above by removing check marks from the applicable options.
- Click the Advanced tab. Make sure no text is typed in the field after IMAP Path Prefix, and put a check mark in the box marked Use SSL. The port number will change to 993.
- Close the Accounts window.
- Save the changes if asked.
Junk Mail--OS X 10.5.x (Leopard)

- Drag the Junk icon to your toolbar.
- Click Done.
- From the Mail menu, click Preferences.
- Click the Junk Mail icon. You will see the Junk Mail window, which should look similar to the following:
- Click in the checkbox in front of Enable junk mail filtering to insert a check mark (if necessary).
- Click the radio button in front of Move it to Junk mailbox.
- Make sure the rest of your window matches the one below.
- You must quit and restart Mail for the changes to take effect. From the Mail menu, click Quit.
- Relaunch the Mail application and provide your password when prompted.

- Name field: UD LDAP
- Server field: ldap.udel.edu
- Search Base field: o=udel.edu
The Server Info window should now look similar to the following:
- Click Save.
- Click Done.
- Close the Composing window.
Now when you create a new e-mail message, begin typing a recipient's name in the To field. Mail will query the LDAP server and provide you with a drop-down list of potential addresses. Select the desired address.
