E-mail Disk Quotas

  • Any new e-mail sent to you while your e-mail has exceeded your e-mail disk quota will be rejected and returned to its sender.
  • More disk space has been allocated for each e-mail account on the new Mirapoint e-mail system. Each user will have at least 30M of space for his or her e-mail.
  • With this increased disk space comes a change in the way e-mail quotas are calculated. Messages in your Inbox and all other saved messages count towards your e-mail disk quota.
  • The easiest way to monitor your e-mail disk quota is to use Webmail Direct, the Mirapoint webmail client. Webmail Direct always displays how much disk space you are using at the top of any e-mail folder index (including the index for your Inbox).

SPAM Blocking

  • Mirapoint's Webmail Direct junk mail filtering will, for the most part, replace the CanIt SPAM trap system. Users of all e-mail programs can use Webmail Direct to set up this feature. You can then use Webmail Direct (or any other e-mail client) to review the contents of your Junk Mail folder.
  • If you were using CanIt to manage your unsolicited e-mail, and if you had created lists of allowed and disallowed senders and sites, those lists will automatically be moved into Webmail Direct's Whitelist and Blocklist for your account.
  • If you choose to use Webmail Direct's junk mail filtering, log in to Webmail Direct, and follow these directions to set up the Mirapoint junk mail filter. If you choose this option, potential SPAM is moved to a Junk Mail folder on UD's new e-mail system. Junk mail is held for 30 days, unless you delete the messages sooner than that.
  • If you opt to use the Webmail Direct junk mail filter, you must check your Junk Mail folder often so as not to miss important messages that have been mis-identified as potential SPAM.
  • Eventhough you need to use Webmail Direct to set up the Mirapoint junk mail filter, you can check the Junk Mail folder in Webmail Direct or any other e-mail client that is properly configured.

"Vacation" Messages

  • After your account has been moved to the new system, you will not be able to use the UNIX vacation command to set an "away message."
  • Users of all e-mail programs can use Webmail Direct to set an "Automatic Reply."
    1. Login to Webmail Direct at
      http://mail.udel.edu
    2. Select Options from the main menu (to the left of your screen).
    3. Select Automatic Reply from the Access Control tool list (towards the top of your screen).
    4. Type an appropriate subject and message in the text boxes provided.
    5. Click Start.
    6. Select Logout from the main menu.
    7. When you return to campus, login to Webmail Direct, select Options, and select Automatic Reply. On the screen that displays your automatic reply, click Stop. You can then read your e-mail in Webmail Direct or select Logout.
  • Caution: Because it sends responses to your e-mail that, in essence, confirm the validity of your e-mail address, using the Automatic Reply option can increase the amount of unsolicited e-mail (SPAM) your account receives.

Forwarding your E-mail: No more .forward files

  • If you have forwarded your UD e-mail to another Internet Service Provider (ISP) or to another server on the UD campus, the forwarding will continue to work; however, all future changes to forwarding must be done at
    http://www.udel.edu/network
  • After your e-mail account has been moved to the new system, .forward files on the central UNIX system will no longer be functional. However, if you had your e-mail forwarded to another ISP using a .forward file, that forwarding information was moved to the new e-mail system.
