Using Mail Aliases with alternate "incoming" INBOXes

This document contains instructions for using a shared mail-alias on UD's server. The shared mail-alias system will continue to be hosted at copland.udel.edu.

  1. Follow the instructions below for Mozilla as customized by UD.

    1. Start up the Mozilla mail application.
    2. Go to the Edit menu and select Mail and Newsgroup Account Settings.
    3. Choose Add Account an account.
    4. Select Email Account.
    5. Click Next
    6. In the Your Name box, fill in the name of the department using the mail-alias (e.g. Office of the Registrar).
    7. In the Email Address box, fill in the mail-alias@udel.edu address (e.g., abcd-req@udel.edu--the e-mail address clients use to sent e-mail to this alias).
    8. Click Next
    9. Select IMAP as the server type.
    10. In the Incoming Server box, type: copland.udel.edu
    11. Click Next
    12. In the Incoming User Name and Outgoing User Name boxes, replace the alias ID with your UDelNet ID. For example, if your e-mail address is katedoe@udel.edu, type "katedoe" in this box. Note: your application may only have an Incoming User Name box.
    13. Click Next
    14. In the Account Name box, fill in the mail-alias@udel.edu address if not already pre-filled (e.g., abcd-req@udel.edu--the e-mail address clients use to sent e-mail to this alias).
    15. Click Next
  2. A verification page with all your setup information will appear. Click the Finish
  3. After you have set up an account with the new account Wizard, don't close the Mail & Newsgroup Account Setting window. Select Server Settings under the new mail-alias account and perform these steps:

    1. Click the Advanced button.
    2. In the IMAP Server Directory box, type

      mail/
    3. Select Show only subscribed folders.
    4. Click OK
    5. Click OK again to close the Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings Window
    6. From the File menu choose Subscribe and select all of the folders in the mail-alias folder and deselect the ones not in the mail-alias folder.
    7. Enter your UDelNetID password if prompted
    8. In the Account box use the down arrow to select your mail-alias
    9.

Every time you go into your mail-alias account's "incoming" folder, you will see this error message: Security Error: Domain Name Mismatch. This message appears because you are using two different mail servers (mail.udel.edu for your own e-mail and copland.udel.edu for your mail-alias e-mail). Click OK to bypass this error message.

    10. Enter your UDelNetID password again when prompted
