About UD Web Proxy

The web proxy server is a resource that provides access to materials previously available only through a direct connection to the campus network.

If you have used UD's old web proxy service, follow these directions to disable the old service before proceeding with the rest of the instructions in this document.

On-campus users and off-campus users who dial in directly to the University of Delaware do not need to use a proxy server with their web browser.

University of Delaware users who access the Internet by first connecting to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) other than the University can use the web proxy to gain access to materials whose use is restricted, by license, to University staff and students. If you use an ISP to reach the University's network, you will need to use UD's web proxy server to access restricted UD Library databases, the UDeploy software site, and some other resources on our campus network.

If you live in a non-University apartment complex that provides data connections, you will need to use UD's web proxy server.

The new implementation of our proxy server should work with all versions of

Our web proxy server does NOT work reliably with the following:

If you find a resource that is not available from off campus using UD's web proxy, contact the IT Help Center.

Do note, however, that if you are using an ISP or an account at a non-University work site, and if that service provider or work site uses a firewall to protect its network, you may be unable to use the UD web proxy server to access the information.

While using UD's proxy server, if you leave a "proxified" web resource, go to an unrestricted site, and then return to a site that requires your use of the web proxy server, or if you link to a site off campus and then come back to a restricted site, you may need to re-authenticate via UD's web proxy server. Therefore, we recommend that you add the UD Proxify "button" to your web browser's personal toolbar to expedite your continued use of the University's proxy server.

Installing and Using The UD Proxify "Button"

We suggest you add the UD Proxify "button" to your web browser's personal toolbar to expedite your use of the UD Proxy Server.
Windows XP users whose systems are running Windows XP Service Pack 2 may need to alter their Internet security settings to install the UD Proxify button.

  1. Make sure that your web browser's Personal toolbar (or Links toolbar) is visible and unlocked.
  2. Go to the UD Proxify "button" installation web page
    (http://proxy.nss.udel.edu/proxify_button.html).

    UD's Proxy Server
  3. In the middle of that web page, you'll see what appears to be a link called UD Proxify. Using your mouse, click and drag it from that web page to your web browser's toolbar. It will remain in your browser's toolbar for subsequent work sessions.

  4. While viewing a site that requires you to access it through the web proxy server, click the UD Proxify button to access the information.

  5. On the University of Delaware Proxy login screen, provide your UDelNet ID and password that you use to access the University's central UNIX servers (e.g., Copland, Strauss, Mahler, mail.udel.edu). Then select Submit Query or Submit.

Some web browsers may require you to refresh or reload the page to see the restricted information.

After you have installed the UD Proxify button, repeat steps 4 and 5 (clicking UD Proxify, providing your UDelNet ID and password) during subsequent worksessions to identify yourself as a member of the University of Delaware community authorized to access information whose use is restricted to the University community. Go to the page you wish to access before clicking the UDProxify button.

If you are using certain research resources licensed for University use by the University of Delaware Library, you may need to use the UD Proxify button as you move from one off-campus research web site to another.

In addition, if you leave a "proxified" web resource, go to an unrestricted site, and then return to a site that requires your use of the web proxy server, or if you link to a site off campus and then come back to a restricted site, you may need to re-authenticate via UD's web proxy server. Use the UD Proxify button to re-authenticate.

Going Directly to a Specific Site Using UD Web Proxy

  1. Using your web browser, go to UD's Proxy Server (http://proxy.nss.udel.edu).

    UD's Proxy Server
  2. If you need to use a Library resource, select the first link on that web page: UD Library via proxy. Do note, however, that you may need to use the proxy server to authenticate yourself when you switch from one research web site to another. Therefore, we recommend that you use the UD Proxify button as your method of accessing multiple research sites.

If you have a specific URL to which you need access, you can type it in the box labeled "Proxify" a real url to route access through UD's proxy, then press the RETURN or ENTER key. For example, you could type

    http://udeploy.udel.edu

in the box, then press RETURN to be taken to the UDeploy software site via the UD Proxy server.
  3. Provide the UDelNet ID and password you use to access the University's central UNIX servers (e.g., Copland, Strauss, Mahler, mail.udel.edu). Then select Submit Query or Submit.

Some web browsers may require you to refresh or reload the page to see the restricted information.
  4. If you see a message about the site's security certificate, select Yes or Continue.

If you leave a "proxified" web resource, go to an unrestricted site, and then return to a site that requires your use of the web proxy server, or if you link to a site off campus and then come back to a restricted site, you may need to re-authenticate via UD's web proxy server. Therefore, you may find it more convenient to put the UD Proxify Button on your web browser's toolbar. You can then use this button any time you need to use the web proxy server.

Using "Unproxify" to Document a Web Page

If you are using UD's web proxy while doing research and if you need to document the "true" URL of a document you encounter, follow these steps:

  1. Copy the apparent URL of the document you are viewing. (For example, if you were viewing this document using the Web Proxy server, you'd see this listed as the URL of this document:
    http://proxy.nss.udel.edu:2055/topics/connect/webproxy/index.html.)
  2. Go to UD's Proxy Server (http://proxy.nss.udel.edu).
  3. Either type or paste the URL you copied in step 1 into the box labeled "Unproxify" a url to find the real url, for publishing references and press the RETURN or ENTER key.
  4. Transcribe or print the information displayed.
