The Web Proxy Server: Description

What is the Web Proxy Server?

The Web Proxy Server is a resource that provides access to materials previously available only through a direct connection to the campus network.

If, instead, you use an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to reach the campus network, you will now be able to use restricted UD Library databases if you configure your web browser to use UD's Web Proxy Server.

UD's Web Proxy Server works with Netscape Navigator 2.x and 3.x, and Netscape Communicator 4.x. The University provides support for users of Netscape's software only. (Go to UD Software Distribution Web area if you need to download a copy of Netscape.)

Note: If you are using an ISP, you may not be able to get to the Electronic Community Citizenship Exam (ECCE). In this case, you will have to take ECCE from a UD computing site.

The UD Web Proxy Server will not work if you are connecting from behind your company's firewall.

Where to Find the Web Proxy Server

The Web Proxy Server is available on the University's central UNIX server. To access the Web Proxy Server, you must use the Netscape browser software (any version from 2.x to the latest version).

Microsoft Internet Explorer does not currently work with UD's Web Proxy Server. If a University of Delaware student needs to use UD's Web Proxy Server in order to do his or her school work, he or she should download Netscape from the UD Software Distribution page.

  5. Type http://www.udel.edu/proxy/udel.pac in the "Location :" box.
  6. Click "OK."

To set your browser to "Automatic Proxy Configuration" with Netscape Navigator 4.0 (and later):

  1. Select the "Edit" pull-down menu.
  2. Click on "Preferences".
  3. Click on the word "Advanced" in the left hand sub-window.

  5. In the left hand sub-window, click on the "+" or triangular icon to the left of "Advanced" to open the advanced preferences menu.
  6. Select "Automatic Proxy Configuration"

Use the browser as you normally do. You will be asked to "authenticate" when you first start up the Netscape browser. You may authenticate in either of the following ways:

After you complete the authentication process, you will be able to use the databases that are normally restricted to the University of Delaware campus.

Common Problems and Questions

Q: I can't get the Web Proxy server to work from the public school at which I teach.
Q: I'm an MBA student at UD, but I can't get to some of the library resources from my computer at my office.
In both cases, the answer is probably that the user is attempting to come into UD's Web from a computer that is behind a "firewall." The Web Proxy server will not work if your network connection is behind a firewall. Web Proxy Servers are not designed to "circumvent" the security measures in place at your place of employment. However, if you are using Netscape over a non-firewalled connection, you should be able to get in.

Q: Why can't I use Internet Explorer and the Web Proxy server?
At this time, the University supports Netscape's browsing software not Microsoft's. Further, certain administrative applications have been written to take advantage of Netscape's features and will, therefore, not work with Internet Explorer. Finally, Internet Explorer interacts with proxy servers in a different way than does Netscape's software.

If you are a UD student, staff member, or faculty member, you may download Netscape from the UD Software Distribution page.
