Configuring PPP with MacOS X

Read these important notes before starting.

Configuration Instructions

  1. From Apple menu, select System Preferences.

  2. In System Preferences window, double-click the Network icon.

  3. From the Location drop-down menu, select New Location.

  4. Name your new location. In this example, since we are dialing into the University of Delaware, we have named it UD PPP.

Click OK after you have provided a name. You will return to the Network window.
  5. Perform these operations in the Network window:
    1. From the Show drop-down menu, select Internal Modem.
    2. Click the TCP/IP tab.
    3. From the Configure drop-down menu, select Using PPP.

  6. Click the PPP tab. Fill in the appropriate boxes with your UDelNet ID and a telephone number for UD's modem pool.

Use this chart to select the telephone number you wish to use.

You are liable for any potential telephone charges for calling UD's modem pool. Therefore, whenever possible, make sure the phone number that you select is a local call from your dialing area. Do not use University modem numbers from outside your local calling area as main or alternate numbers unless you are willing to pay the phone charges.

If you are certain that you will be the only person using the computer, you may provide your password and click the box next to Save password. However, if more than one person has access to the computer, we do not recommend that you select this option.

  7. Most users are quite comfortable with the default PPP options. However, you may click the PPP Options button and change a variety of session options:

For example, some users prefer to uncheck the box next to Connect automatically....

If you made any changes, click OK to preserve those changes. If you did not, click Cancel. You will return to the Network window.
  8. In the Network window, click Apply Now, then close the window.
