Configuring PPP with Mac OS X

PPP Configuration Instructions for Mac OS X 10.4.x

  1. From the Apple menu, click System Preferences.
     


  2. In the System Preferences window, click the Network icon (in the bottom row) as shown in the following graphic:
     

  3. From the Location drop-down menu, click New Location as shown in the following graphic:
     


  4. Type a name for the new location. In the example below, we used the name "UD-PPP" because we are dialing in to the University of Delaware.
     


  5. Click OK. You will return to the Network window.
  6. In the Network window, perform the following three steps:

    1. From the Show drop-down menu, click Internal Modem.
    2. Click the TCP/IP tab.
    3. From the Configure drop-down menu, click Using PPP. The Network window should now look similar to the following:
       
  7. Click the PPP tab.
  8. In the Telephone Number field, type the appropriate telephone number for your location (see table of available telephone numbers ).
  9. In the Account Name field, type your UDelNet ID (i.e., your username).
  10. If you are certain that you will be the only person using the computer, you may type your password and select the checkbox in front of Save password. However, if more than one person has access to the computer, do not select this option. The Network window should now look similar to the following:
     


    IMPORTANT
    You are liable for any potential telephone charges for calling UD's modem pool. Therefore, whenever possible, make sure the phone number you select is a local call from your dialing area. Do not use University modem numbers from outside your local calling area as main or alternate numbers unless you are willing to pay any additional phone charges.

  11. If you want to change session options, click the PPP Options button. You should see a window that looks similar to the following:
     


    For example, some users prefer to uncheck the checkbox in front of Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications.

  12. If you make changes, click OK.
  13. If you did not make changes, click Cancel. You will return to the Network window.
  14. In the Network window, click Apply Now.
  15. Close the window.

PPP Configuration Instructions for Mac OS X 10.5.x

  1. From the Apple menu, click System Preferences.

  2. In the System Preferences window, click the Network icon (in the bottom row) as shown in the following graphic:

  1. From the Location drop-down menu, click Edit Locations.
  2. Click the plus button ( + ) to add a new location.
  3. Type a name for the new location. In the following graphic, we used "UD-PPP" because we are dialing in to the University of Delaware.

  1. Click Done. You will return to the Network window.
  2. In the left-hand device column, click either the Internal or External Modem (depending on the type of modem you use).
  3. In the Telephone Number field, type the appropriate telephone number for your location (see table of available telephone numbers).
  4. In the Account Name field, type your UDelNet ID (username).
  5. If you are certain that you will be the only person using the computer, you may type your password. However, if more than one person has access to the computer, do not type your password. The Network window should now look similar to the following:

  1. To change any session options, click the Advanced button in the lower-right corner of the window.
  2. Click the PPP button.

  1. If you make changes, click OK.
  2. If you did not make changes, click Cancel. You will return to the Network window.
  3. In the Network window, click Apply.
  4. Close the window.
