Configuring PPP with Windows 2000 Using the Microsoft Internet Connection Wizard (IE 5 or 6)

Read these important notes before starting.


Configuration Instructions

  1. After starting up Windows 2000, click Connection Wizard on the Desktop or go to the Connection Wizard by following this menu path from the Start button:

    Start -> Programs-> Accessories-> Communications-> Internet Connection Wizard

  2. You will see a window like the one below. Select I want to set up my Internet connection manually, then click Next.
     

  3. On the next screen, select I connect through a phone line and modem, then click Next.
     

  4. You may see a screen in which you are prompted to create a new connection. If you do, select Create a new dial up connection, then click Next.

  5. On the Phone Number screen, fill in the appropriate phone number from the chart below.
     
    You are liable for any potential telephone charges for calling UD's modem pool. Therefore, whenever possible, make sure the phone number that you select is a local call from your dialing area. Do not use University modem numbers from outside your local calling area as main or alternate numbers unless you are willing to pay the phone charges.

  6. Click Next.

  7. Fill in your UDelNet ID and password as requested.

  8. Click Next.

  9. In the next window, type a name for the connection, for example, "University of Delaware."
     

  10. Click Next.

  11. When you see Do you want to set up an Internet mail account now?, select No.
     

  12. Click Next.

  13. On the next screen, uncheck the box next to To connect to the Internet immediately....
     

  14. After you have removed the check mark, click Finish.

    Next you'll need to turn off Windows 2000 multi-link option.
     

  15. From the Start button, choose the Settings menu, then the Network and Dial-up Connections sub-menu.
  16. Right-click on the University of Delaware connection.
  17. Choose Properties.
  18. Click the Networking tab.
  19. Below the Type of dial-up server box, click Settings.
  20. Uncheck the Negotiate multi-link for single link connections option.
  21. Click OK until all the dialog boxes close.
  22. Try connecting again.


Connecting to the University's Network

To connect to the University's computing network, start a software application that uses the PPP connection (e.g., Secure Shell, Netscape, Internet Explorer). You will automatically be prompted to make the connection.

If you need to install any of these Internet applications or if you need to install anti-virus protection, go to the Windows Software section of the UD Network Connection CD.
