Setting up Your Windows XP Computer's Ethernet Adapter Manually

Before you get started....


Configuring Your Computer's Ethernet Adapter

  1. From the Start menu, open the Control Panel. Double-click on the Network Connections icon.
  2. Right-click on the Local Area Connection icon and choose Properties.
  3. On the General tab, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on the Properties button.
  4. Make sure that the radio buttons for Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain a DNS server address automatically are selected. Click OK.
  5. Make sure that the checkbox next to File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks is UNchecked. Doing so will configure your computer so that no one can browse the contents of your computer over the campus network.
  6. Select the Advanced tab. In the Windows Firewall section, click on the Settings button and make sure that the radio button next to On (Recommended) is selected. Then click OK.
  7. If you see a section of the Advanced tab labeled Internet Connection Sharing, make sure that Allow other users to connect through this computer's Internet connection is NOT checked. (Note: Most desktop computer users will not see this setting.)
  8. Click OK to save the settings.


Configuring Your Computer's Wireless Network Adapter

  1. From the Start menu, open the Control Panel. Double-click on the Network Connections icon.
  2. Right-click on the Wireless Network Connection icon and choose Properties.
  3. On the General tab, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on the Properties button.
  4. Make sure that the radio buttons for Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain a DNS server address automatically are selected. Click OK.
  5. Make sure that the checkbox next to File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks is UNchecked. Doing so will configure your computer so that no one can browse the contents of your computer over the campus network.
  6. Select the Advanced tab. In the Windows Firewall section, click on the Settings button and make sure that the radio button next to On (Recommended) is selected. Then click OK.
  7. In the section of the Advanced tab labeled Internet Connection Sharing make sure that Allow other users to connect through this computer's Internet connection is NOT checked.
  8. Click OK to save the settings.
  9. To register your computer's wireless network adapter for full Internet access, don't forget to visit the Network Connection Web page at http://www.udel.edu/network.
