The Long Christmas Dinner
Thornton Wilder
Professional Theatre Training Program, Hartshorn Theatre
Written several years before Wilder’s well-known Our Town, this brief one-act cleverly chronicles ninety years in the lives of the Bayard family. Focusing on the family rituals of a holiday dinner, four subsequent generations of the Bayard’s explore the themes of love, death, change and continuity. Simple, yet profound, Wilder renders a universal truth – people may come and go, but family continues on.
