Program Description

The Ph.D. in Urban Affairs and Public Policy is a research-oriented degree that is well respected in the field for its quality of scholarship and service. We welcome applicants who have been active in their field and who wish to pursue advanced graduate work as well as those who have recently completed master's level programs in urban affairs, public or environmental policy, or a social science field. top

Research Specialization

Ph.D. students in Urban Affairs and Public Policy have three established areas of specialization from which to choose. This specialization will be reflected in your area of dissertation expertise as well as help us determine your research center affiliation and the assignment to an appropriate research assistantship for full-time students.

Curriculum Requirements

View the curriculum. The program has three components, which are demonstrated more fully in our typical program of study for study for full-time students.

  • A core curriculum and qualifying examination (Year 1)
  • Development of an area of research specialization (Year 2)
  • Preparation and defense of a dissertation (Year 3 and beyond)
