Core Required Courses (9 credits)
Take two of the following three proseminars for a total of 6 credits:

UAPP 821 Proseminar in Technology, Environment & Society (3 cr)
UAPP 822 Proseminar in Governance, Planning, & Management (3 cr)
UAPP 823 Proseminar in Social & Urban Policy (3 cr)

Take the following course in Epistemology for a total of 3 credits:

UAPP 801 Processes of Social Inquiry (3 cr)

Research Design and Methods Requirements (minimum of 6 credits)

Upon admission, students are expected to have knowledge of statistics at the level of UAPP 815 Public Management Statistics, and knowledge of research design and methodology at the level of UAPP 800 Research Methods and Data Analysis . Those without such knowledge may take UAPP 815 or its equivalent, and UAPP 800 or its equivalent. However, the taking of such courses is for remedial purposes and any credit earned will not count toward fulfilling requirements in this area. In addition to competency at the levels of UAPP 815 and UAPP 800, students must take a minimum of six additional credits of coursework in one or more of the following areas: advanced research design and methodology, qualitative methods, or quantitative methods. The specific courses to be taken depend on the student's area of specialization and the advice of the student's academic advisor.

Comprehensive Examination

After at least two semsters of study, student must pass an examination that tests knowledge of subject matter covered in the two proseminars (UAPP 821, 822, 823 ) taken by student.

Teaching and/or Research Experience (0-3 credits)

Doctoral students must have at least one substantive research or teaching experience during their course of study.

● The Research Experience Requirement is satisfied by the student producing a paper of "publishable quality." The determination of "publishable quality" is made by the faculty member who supervised the preparation of the paper. Presentation of this paper by the student at an appropriate academic conference is encouraged but not required. The paper may be produced through the student's research assistantship, or by the student registering for UAPP 868 Research .

● The Teaching Experience Requirement is satisfied by the student being a Teaching Assistant (TA) for at least one semester, or by the student taking an independent study course (new course: UAPP 862: Teaching Practicum in Urban Affairs and Public Policy ) which involves him/her in substantive aspects of teaching a course being taught by the supervising faculty member.

Academic and Professional Development for Doctoral Students in Urban Affairs and Public Policy

Voluntary sessions organized by faculty and more advanced doctoral students covering a variety of topics dealing with adjusting to doctoral study, progressing through the program, proposing and writing a dissertation, and entering the job market.

Doctoral Dissertation Proposal (3 credits)

UAPP 863 Doctoral Dissertation Proposal .
* For successful completion of this course student must produce a "defensible dissertation proposal." If a defensible proposal has not been produced by the end of the semester, student is given grade of "S" and may then register for UAPP 964 Pre-Candidacy Study for purposes of continuing work on their proposal. Once a defensible proposal is produced, the "S'" grade for UAPP 863 is replaced by a letter grade. Entry into candidacy occurs after the dissertation proposal has been successfully defended.
