MPA program curriculum

Content areas that prepare students for professional practice

MPA candidates are required to complete 42 credit hours to earn the degree. The curriculum consists of core requirements, specialization courses, an internship for those at entry level or changing their careers, a writing requirement, and an Information Technology requirement.

As part of their electives and to satisfy their Information Technology requirement, students are encouraged to take advantage of mini-courses, which are one-credit, skill based courses designed to develop and enhance proficiencies necessary for effective public and nonprofit management.

Important Notes:

(1) All MPA students must meet the program's Statistics requirement. The options include (a) passing the graduate level Statistics Waiver Examination upon entrance, (b) receiving a grade of "B-" or better in UAPP/POSC 815 Public Management Statistics (or equivalent graduate course at the U of D or another university as determined by the MPA program director), or (c) passing a higher level statistics course such as UAPP/POSC 816. While an undergraduate Statistics course is not a prerequisite for admission, students are strongly encouraged to take a Statistics course before entering the MPA program.

(2) Students typically register for Internship Fieldwork course during the fall semester of their second year. The Internship Experience is a requirement for all MPA students who do not possess significan prior professional work experience.

(3) Mini-courses are one-credit courses, usually skills-based, including: Conflict Resolution, Supervising a Multicultural Workforce, Law for Administrators, Fundraising for Nonprofit Organizations, Real World Ethics, Basics of Information Management.

(4) Students must also meet the Information Technology Requirement by taking 3 graduate credits in Information Technology. They must receive a grade of "B-" or better in 3 credits of graduate work in Information Technology as approved by their advisor and the MPA director.
