MA Writing RequirementAnalytical Papers and ThesesIn addition to meeting the core curriculum and concentration course requirements, MA students must complete either a thesis (6 credits) or an analytical paper (3 credits) plus 3 additional credits of course work in the area of concentration. This capstone writing requirement is designed to give students an opportunity to analyze in depth a particular situation, problem, issue, policy, or organization. Theses are generally 40-80 pages in length and are characterized by primary data collection and analysis. Analytical papers are generally 40 pages and are often critical literature reviews of existing data or research. However, the analytical paper may involve some limited primary data collection. The difference in data collection between the thesis and AP is often an issue of scope and purpose. These characterizations are not "set in stone," so any student with questions should contact the chair of their committee and/or advisor. Examples of Analytical Papers:"The Progression of Community Organizing in Central Appalachia:
1929-Present” "Subprime Refinance Lending in Delaware” “Feasibility of Tradeable Permit System in South Korea: Case Studies
of Emissions Trading Systems in the USA” “Infill Policy and Possibility” Examples of Theses:“Preservation Through the Lens of Traditional Cultural Properties” “Follow the Drinking Gourd: Reconstructing the Historic Fragmentary
Landscapes of the Underground Railroad” “Framing Crime on Local Television News”
