Protection of Human Subjects in ResearchHuman Subjects ReviewIf your proposed research design involves any contact with human volunteers -- interviews, surveys, observations, focus groups, or any type of testing -- you must consider the protection of your human subjects. University policy and federal law (45 CFR 46) define three levels of review for research proposals using subjects--exemption from review, expedited review, and full board review. The level depends on who the subjects will be and how much risk their participation will involve. The Office for the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) has established procedures for determining which kind of human subjects review your research demands. Your participation in the Human Subjects Review process will be governed by protocols established for the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy. After reviewing the protocols, an application packet should be completed and sent electronically to Dr. Paul Solano, the chair of the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy human subjects review committee. In addition, Dr. Danilo Yanich is SUAPP's representative to the University Institutional Review Board. |
