What is New Student Orientation?
New Student Orientation (NSO) is a one-day program, covering important topics such as student life, academics and registration, and safety and well-being. During your NSO day, you will meet your new classmates; learn about your College; receive academic advisement from a faculty member or graduate student to register for your first semester courses; obtain your student ID card; and interact with the orientation staff.
For students entering UD in the fall of 2012, NSO will take place Tuesday, June 19 through Wednesday, July 18. Students will receive a mailing with details about Summer NSO beginning in early May.
It is mandatory for every new student to attend NSO, but if for some reason you are unable to attend, please email newstudentorientation@udel.edu for further instructions. In addition, refer to the New Student Checklist and Resources pages for information about to prepare for your transition to UD.

Welcome to the UD Family!
As the parent or family member of a new student, we recognize that the transition to the University of Delaware can be both exciting and stressful. We have created an orientation program just for you with important information to put your mind at ease and answer your questions, as well as prepare you to be the University's partner in promoting your student's independence and success. Your orientation will be completely separate from your student's NSO, but the programs occur concurrently . Your day on campus for NSO begins in the Trabant University Center at 8:00am and ends by 5:00pm. Parking for NSO is only available in the Trabant Garage , adjacent to the Trabant University Center.
During NSO, you will have the opportunity to hear from a variety of faculty, staff and students about important processes, policies, resources and activities for your student. In the right hand box, click on the Sample Parent Schedule for a snapshot of what your day may include when attending NSO.
In order to attend NSO, your student must register each guest by completing the New Student Orientation (NSO) Registration Form, accessed through your student's My Blue Hen Home portal. Each new student is billed a one-time, non-refundable NSO fee of $120, regardless of program attendance, on their first semester tuition bill. The non-refundable event fee per guest is $35, payable through the NSO Registration Form by credit card or online check. There is no fee for guests under the age of 10; however, NSO might not be appropriate for siblings and young children as the program is designed for new college students and parents.
The NSO Registration Form allows your student to select an orientation date based on his or her College and major, and we recommend that families review this form together before submitting the form. Your student may also use this form to change his or her date up to 2 business days prior to the original selected date.
While some Colleges advise new students every day of NSO, others only have a few dates available for particular majors so we strongly encourage your student to select one of the listed dates. First Year Experience
All first-year students participate in a First Year Experience (FYE). The FYE Program is designed to help you succeed both academically and socially in your first year at UD. It will help you feel more at home on our campus while meeting other first year students, and learning about resources at UD.
All bachelor and associate degree undergraduate students entering UD are required to register and successfully complete at least one FYE. On the Newark campus, all first year students are housed according to their FYE academic interest in residence halls across campus.
All bachelor degree undergraduate students transferring to UD are NOT required to take a First Year Experience if the transfer students registered and successfully completed at least once semester at another college or university. However, certain First Year Seminars are required in the curriculum of particular majors regardless of prior UD transfer credits.
