MULTICULTURAL CHAPTER
Recruitment & Membership Intake

Policy & Procedures

Mission

The fraternities and sororities at the University of Delaware consider for membership the most intelligent, well rounded, and talented students from the UD community, whose personal, social, and academic qualifications are acceptable to the respective organizations. Chapters are not merely interested in the accumulation of members, but emphasize the quality, dedication and integrity of the respective memberships.  Chapters seek individuals who will respect and extend Greek Life policies and programs.  In return, chapters act as conduit through which individuals can develop personally and professionally, while simultaneously providing service to the community.  Membership is a solemn commitment, and is intended to be a lifelong dedication to the ideas and purposes of member organizations.

Recruitment

Chartered fraternities and sororities are allowed to recruit on campus under the guidelines of formal recruitment as regulated by the University of Delaware and the chapters’ respective local and national governing bodies.

Recruitment of University freshmen is a privilege regulated by the Chapter Assessment Program (CAP). You must be a Gold, Silver or Bronze chapter to recruit first semester freshmen students.

The Coordinator of Multicultural Chapter Advisement will determine the dates for recruitment and membership intake.  This includes interest/informational meetings, interview times and dates, membership intake programs, and offers (bids) to prospective new members.

All full-time undergraduate students wishing to be part of the recruitment process must register for recruitment on-line at: http://www.udel.edu/student-centers/FandS/recruit/index.html.  Those students who meet the minimum requirements to enter the recruitment process will be approved by the Assistant Director of Student Centers.

Once the chapter has identified those members who have completed the on-line registration and are ready for in-take; the chapter president must complete the Intake Petition Form and submit it to 217 Trabant at least 14 days before the start of the in-take program. Copies of the form are available in the Greek Life resource room.

Students also agree to pay any recruitment fees as set by the chapters and the local governing councils. Entering the recruitment process does not guarantee an acceptance into any fraternity or sorority. Selection of members is at the discretion of individual chapters and is not controlled by the University of Delaware.

A chapter and/or individual chapter members who have initiated an underground/ghost member is in violation of University policy and charges may be brought against the organization, and/or individual chapter members through the University of Delaware Judicial System. An underground/ghost member is an individual who was not approved for membership by the University of Delaware and/or the corporate headquarters of the fraternity/sorority.  The organization’s corporate headquarters will also be notified.

The Coordinator of Multicultural Chapter Advisement must be notified in writing, of any recruitment related activities before they occur.  These recruitment activities include but are not limited to:  interest meetings (recruitment or informational seminars), interviews, membership intake programs, new member coming out shows, etc.

Meet the Greeks

Meet the Greeks is the multicultural chapters open recruitment program which occurs during the fall and spring semesters.  Recognized multicultural chapters are required to attend the event. An overview of the Greek system and the process and policy for NPHC & LMGC recruitment is presented.  Guests visit each of the fraternity or sorority rooms where the fraternity or sorority members introduce themselves and briefly discuss their purpose and activities.  Information regarding any chapter mandatory interest meetings will be provided by the individual chapters.

Chapter Interest Meetings

It is mandatory that students attend the official information/interest meeting for the fraternity or sorority that they wish to join.  Students have to option to attend more than one information/interest meeting.  Information/Interest Week generally occurs around the twelfth week of the previous semester.

Participating chapters must record attendance and submit the attendance list to the Coordinator for Multicultural Chapter Advisement on the first business day following the information/interest meeting.

Those chapters whose national headquarters prohibit them from participating in the, University of Delaware Information/Interest Week, must adhere to the following, no less than 14 days before their recruitment activity:

New Member Education (Pledge) Period

The new member education (pledge) period for fraternities and sororities may not be longer than six (6) weeks. All new member education (pledge) programs must conclude on or before the Sunday following the ninth (9th) week of classes for the semester.

Any chapter that exceeds the six (6) week new member education (pledge) period, and/or continues a new member education (pledge) period beyond the Sunday following the ninth (9th) week of the semester, will be in violation of University policy, and charges may be brought against the organization, and/or individual chapter member(s) through the University of Delaware Judicial System.

New members will be required to attend the Student Centers’ mandatory new member training.  The training will take place a few weeks after the conclusion of the new member education period, and before the end of regular classes for the semester.

New Member Coming Out shows must occur within seven (7) days of the official initiation of the new members.  No organization will be permitted to present its new members after the seven (7) day period. The Coordinator of Multicultural Chapter Advisement or designee from the Student Centers must be in attendance at all New Member Coming Out shows.

Hazing

The National Pan-Hellenic Council, National Offices of local chapters, and the University of Delaware have a “zero tolerance” approach to hazing. In addition, any form of hazing is against Delaware State Law.

NPHC Presidents Joint Position Statement Against Hazing

“The organizations of the Nation pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. (NPHC) are committed to nurturing the ideals of sisterhood and fraternalism in an atmosphere of responsibility and respect.  We are also committed to upholding the dignity and self-respect of all persons seeking membership therein.  Hazing is antithetical to this commitment and is prohibited by the rules of each NPHC organization.  In 1990, the member organizations of the NPHC jointly agreed to disband pledging as a form of admission.  At the dawn of a new millennium, we the members of the national pan-Hellenic Council do hereby reaffirm our unequivocal opposition to hazing and those who seek to perpetuate it.”
