BALTIMORE -- The University of Delaware women's tennis team had its five-match win streak halted on Monday afternoon, falling to Maryland-Baltimore County by a 6-1 score at Retriever Tennis Complex despite a second-singles victory from freshman Courtney Fenimore and a third-doubles triumph by sophomore Elena Berry and freshman Ivana Petrich.

Fenimore took the first set from the Retrievers' Alice Chen by a 6-2 tally, but Chen responded with a 7-6 win in the second, capturing a hard-fought tie-break 9-7. Never rattled, Fenimore bounced back in the third-set breaker, taking control early on the way to a 10-4 decision and the Hens' only singles win of the day.

In other singles matches, senior Susan Pollack suffered a 3-6, 6-3, 10-3 setback to UMBC's Ana Mungo at No. 1, Pascaline Cette defeated Berry 6-4, 6-1 at the third spot, and junior Amanda Campbell came up short in a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Cornelia Carapcea at No. 4.

Berry's setback ended her nine-match win streak in singles play.

Senior No. 5 Alexa Dragonette fell 6-2, 6-1 to Joy Adewumi of UMBC, while Petrich (at right) battled to the final point of a white-knuckle 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 loss to Emily Mannix in their sixth-singles showdown.

All three doubles matches came down to the wire. At No. 1, the UMBC duo of Chen and Cette outlasted Pollack and Fenimore 8-6. Mungo and Mannix followed suit at the second spot, where they downed Campbell and Dragonette by an identical 8-6 score to secure another point for the Retrivers. But Berry and Petrich wouldn't allow a doubles sweep, notching a 9-7 win over Carapcea and Adewumi.

UD (11-2, 5-0 Colonial Athletic Association) lost its eighth consecutive meeting with UMBC. The Hens' last win in the series came in the 1998-99 season.

Delaware will compete in the CAA Championships on Friday in Newport News, VA, where the fifth-seeded Hens will take on No. 4 seed Georgia State at 3:30 p.m.
